There are 3 mistakes in this post, find them and win a cookie.

Hints: the best, RPG, and Oblivion.
I have only been gaming for 8 years, so if you are referring to an old RPG eing better, I wouldn't know. How are Fallout 3 and Oblivion not RPG's? Finally, Oblivon is still my all time most played, and one of my favourite games.
They're pseudo-rpgs, games with rpg elements to them.

Fallout and Oblivion are more RPGs than any other genre; sure Fallout 3 has some FPS components, but it sort of falls flat on it's face with the whole "shooter" part of "FPS". One of the most important things in an RPG is character development, and if you want to go beyond skill trees and so on, you need a "sandboxy" sort of game, with morality and ethics thrown in (as Fallout 3 does). Sure it doesn't have the "feel" Fallout 1 or 2, but insofar as sequels go, it's not half bad.

I've almost completely given up hoping for a new isometric RPG to come out... Something along the lines of Fallout 1 - 2 or Arcanum would never get made in this dday and age, and for shame.

It depends... Bioshock is better, but it only lasts for about ten hours, Fallout 3 on the other hand is still a great game and it lasts for hundreds of hours!!1!TWO!!

Bioshock was pretty good, as well Fallout 3. The problem with Fallout 3 is that after a X number of hours playing the game you gain the urge to eat a shitload of M&M's just so you can make sure you're not colourblind from looking at the grey and brown environment all damn day.

My vote goes to Mass Effect.
I echo Yurimistress on all points. Not that Mass Effect isn't without its flaws (woah, accidental triple negative), but it's more fun than Fallout 3.

Without having played it, I suspect Bioshock is the most fun.

Well, obviously. Why would anyone who hated the first two hours finish the game?

Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, Temple of Elemental Evil, Icewind Dale, KotOR, from what we've seen Dragon Age. Also, while Fallout 3... caaaan be considered an RPG, Oblivion? Really? I see more roleplaying in action games.

RPG = Roleplaying game, you play the 'role' of a vault dweller in a wasteland.
Since a lot of gamers are either new, or haven't been around for 20 years to see all the previous rpgs, fallout 3 WOULD be considered the best modern rpg lately, and since oblivion is also modern it does work, sort of.
RPG = Roleplaying game, you play the soldier with a super nanosuit in Crysis. Oops.

Let's try again... RPG = Roleplaying game, you play the racing driver in Need for Speed. Oops again?

Okay, you would be correct when saying your examples of roleplaying games, which are games you play a role in. But fallout 3 is also a typical rpg because you level, do quests, collect gear, talk to people, and so on.

That's why I semi-agreed that Fallout 3 is kinda of an RPG. A poor RPG (but a good shooter), but Oblivion? Only character advacement is RPG-like. But then we can argue that again racing games can be considered RPG, because you can upgrade and "level" your car.

Yeah any game with leveling has atleast some rpg elements, but fallout IS an rpg because you CAN get past some obstacles with just speech/pursuasion or whatever. You don't always have to fight, you can sneak or whatever, so it's not really a straight shooter.

Why would we talk about oblivion in this thread though, the games he's heard are good are bioshock and fallout3, so obviously he was thinking about those games. Your dislike of oblivion has no relevance, so your trying to convince him not to get fallout 3 or oblivion and instead get incredibly old (and poor by comparison) games like neverwinter nights is unwarrented. Don't take this the wrong way, I love D&D but nwn is BAD (everything is solved by combat in that game too).

On another note, he wants a game with good combat elements, he clearly states this in his original post. Obviously, games with mass talking and talking fight solving he doesn't want.

Neverwinter Nights is bad? Did you ever play multiplayer? Or player-made mods? I really doubt it. Campaign was trivial, but the main point of the game is awesome multiplayer support. Do you know other games where you can play even with 31 other players and few Dungeon Masters? I doubt it. And who would make a better quest than a living person, capable of avoiding problems such as players having alternative solutions to a problem.

And Oblivion was mentioned before. Someone said that "Fallout 3 is the best RPG, next to it there is only Oblivion". I was responding to that.

Shapsters said:

Here it is.... Oh, wait, actually it says that "F3 is the best NEXT TO Oblivion". So he considers Oblivion the best RPG there is. Okay, all his credibility just flew out the window and crushed on the sidewalk. Then stomped by a dozen of drunken penguins.

If he wants a game with good fight system, he can play an FPS or an action game. People play RPGs for... RPG elements. Not flashy fights.

edit: Oh Jesus Christ, you didn't say "incredibly old (and poor by comparison)"? You did? I better stop posting before I get suspended for heavy insults, because this is a classic situation of a new gamer and the words "It's old, so it's bad".

Bioshock isn't an RPG.

I loved Bioshock, but I must say get Fallout 3. I didn't enjoy it much, personally, but only because I could have been playing the superior Oblivion instead and felt that time with Fallout 3 was time wasted.

I'm not saying it's so old it's bad, but it's past its time. Yes back in the day NWN was fun with multiplayer, but I doubt there's enough players that actually want to DM anymore to make it fun, and would YOU want to replay it with just campaign? Also, if he's relatively new to RPGing (which I assume considering he's looking for some answers on what RPGs he should try out) most likely his friends wouldn't be into NWN either, so it's twice as lame because what makes or breaks D&D multiplayer games (including NWN) is playing with friends.

The only source we have for what he wants is combat and single player RPGs, NWN on its own isn't a good single player RPG as you clearly stated.

There's a magical thing, it is called opinion, and in my opinion Oblivion is the best RPG, what do I care about my "credibility"?. I have not played any of those games that you are ranting about because I am only 15 and have only been playing games for 8 years. I will let you have your opinion, let me have mine.
