So today I am ordering an Alienware M11x, and I have a choice of processor (Note, they are about the same price)
But anyway, the first one has an intel core 2 duo SU7300 1.3 GHz processor, and the second one has an Intel Core i3 300UM 1.2 GHz processor.

I need to know which one is better. I know which one is newer, I just don't know if it is better than the old one.

I have the Intel Core i3 300UM 1.2 GHz in my computer, it works great, for what I use it for, which is gaming, usualy on medium graphics. Don't know a lot about the other one, but mine works pretty good

1.2 ghz is a very slow speed.
What's your budget? maybe we could find you a better one.
Also note that alien ware tends to be very overpriced.

Edit; didn't realize you were buying a laptop, my apologies.

Also, check motherboards.org, see if they have reviews on these processors, that is the most reliable hardware review site I have been able to find

The i3. You should note that the clock speed of both of these is pretty low. My laptop costed about 600 bucks 2 years ago and I have a core 2 duo that clocks at 2.00 ghz. Not sure about how much of a difference there is in the rest of the aspects that make up a processor which makes those better or different, all I know is that they have a lower clock speed but the i3 has another core... maybe?

for people concerned about the speed, know that if your processors speed is higher than you're motherboard's bus size, it will do no good. So if you are going to get a faster processor, make sure it isn't faster than you're motherboard's bus size

get the i3 its a better core but at 1.3ghz it will struggle to play new games and the system may be sluggish if you can get a i5 or i7 do because you may bottleneck your system

Well, from what I read, I guess I'll get the i3 processor.

The 999$ version of the laptop has an i5, but I don't have that kind of money.

the i3 will have more survivability in terms of obsolescence.

Check power consumption requirements of them and heat generation. See which one performs the best. THAT is the REAL consideration for a laptop.

I do not recommend gaming laptops, ever. A desktop is cheaper for substantially higher gaming power. I thus recommend getting a desktop every 4-5 years and upgrading graphics and or memory on it once or twice. Get a cheapo laptop that can be replaced more frequently-- the laptops are less upgradable and tend to break down before fading to obsolescence anyway, regardless of money spent.

If you part together a desktop computer, rather than buy an overpriced alienware rig, you get MUCH MUCH better traction for power/price.

There is no alternative to the m11x. No one else makes a gaming netbook.

OT you have probably already ordered but I'd check to see if the i3 overclocks or they rely in the turbo feature. I know the SU7300 can be overclocked to 1.7 on the m11x. The i3 is a more clockable chip in theory so if alienware are overclocking that one as well it is the one to choose.

I wouldn't get either to be honest, my netbook had a 1.6GHz dual core and it cost £270, granted it couldn't run games (it wasn't designed to, it was for note taking, well it could but not the latest and greatest) but i very much doubt any game within the last 5-8 years will play well on something with less than 2GHz, yes you can overclock but you can get a standard laptop with more power than those two chips, in fact it being alienware i know for a fact you can get higher specs for the price your planning on paying, you pay for the name and case when it comes to alienware not the tech inside.

I suppose if i had to pick it would probably be the i3 because it's the new range and the i series are meant to be better overclockers (but i very much doubt the heatsink which will be in it will be able to cope with much if any overclock at all), but in all honesty i haven't seen anything that a core 2 series can't handle (but were taking 2GHz min there so dunno) so it's your call really.

Unfortunantly, I'm going to be travaling a lot this summer- So I need something that can atleast run Garry's Mod or Source SDK on the road/plane. I still primaraly console game, but I like PC gaming as well.
