Um, for open world, consider Midnight Club Los Angeles or Burnout Paridise.
For actual racing, go for Forza 2.

I'd say Forza Motorsport 2. But that's probably because it's the only racing game I own, and it just seems to have all the basics...and the online Auction is pretty sweet.

Seeing as you have a 360, I'll recommend Forza 2. If you want a more arcade type racer go with a Burnout Game

No... As a matter of fact, don't get anywhere NEAR that abomination of a game. Actually I'm not very into racing games... My brother however plays a lot of "TrackMania", and he claims that it's awesome... It's not realistic at all however, but if you're into cars and... strange physics... It might be worth checking out.

I say Grid if you're a hardcore racer and burnout paradise if you want to make someone else crash.

OP, this would be much easier if we knew what console you had. Sorry, but it's true. I'm a 360, DS and PC owner and my family has a shared PS2, though that doesn't have much in the way of decent racing games. For Xbox 360, I fully reccomend Project Gotham Racing. I have PGR3 since it came with the console, I wasn't into racing games until I played that. I really want to get PGR4 as well since it has motorbikes too

For DS, try Mario Kart DS, or for Wii go for Mario Kart Wii. Basically any Mario Kart game, for that matter. On PC, not really sure but for retro stuff I'd say Star Wars Episode One: Pod Racer. It's actually quite a decent racing game, I had a copy a few years back. It's fairly old, but definitely worth a go .

I strongly recommend you get Need For Speed Most Wanted, a BRILLIANT racing games. I'd say it's the best in the series but I haven't played the 6th one yet. But It does beat the other 4.

DON'T get Pro Street. It's a terrible game and it really let down the NFS fans.
