Which RPG setting do you prefer?

do you prefer the sci-fi space setting of Fallout 3/Mass Effect or the Medeival setting of Oblivion and Dragon Age, or some other setting (although i'm pretty sure no otehr exists).

personaly i prefer the medieval setting with dragons and swords. i don't know why, it's just a preferance.

so tell me word readers, which do you prefer?

Old or Medieval Ages fantasy settings are my favourite.
It feels more powerful to me. It even influencess how I feel about the game, sci-fi based RPG and action games always scared me more cause my mind seems to see myself as very vulnerable if I loose my weapons. When in an old fantasy setting no matter how much disturbing is the environment and how many times I die in a certain situation I still feel there is the chance to pop up any instant ability that will save the day, smash all the bad guys and let me go without a scratch.
When I think of the massive sci-fi weapons I still think a fantasy hero could survive it, specially if a healing/casting class, while on the other end the sci-fi hero would pretty much end up fried by a fireball or something similar.
That's just me thou.

I like the steampunk based stuff because...well, it puts two of my fav setting together!
I also have a thing for the apocolpic based settings and the true fantasy ones.

Well I like both, but perhaps the sci-fi a tiny bit more. Something like Fallout setting... it's a bit easier to immerse myself when I have some familiar starting points (unlike space operas).

I love open world like Fallout 3 and Oblivion, but between the two I would have to say... well its a tough call. Falluot 3 is a little funner than Oblivion, but I like the scenery more in the latter rather than the dumpy trash wastes of the former. But It kinda sucks when you have bandits running around in glass and ebony armor, really breaks the vibe. I would have to say Fallout 3 and sci-fi, for now atleast.

Sci-Fi is my favorite Genre but sometimes swinging a sword is better. I don't know. Depends on how compelling the story is. If a Sci-Fi RPG is more focused on the cool environment it introduces you to rather than the story, it sucks. The novelty of it's unique world isn't the only thing I look for in a RPG. Sometimes however, the cliche in Medieval setting RPG's bugs me too much. Eh, neither is better than the other I guess. Depends on my mood.

I find fantasy settings more satisfying. Sci Fi is hard to do well (even though Mass Effect is probably one of my favourite games of all time. Top 3 at least).

I mean, the three most played games on my pc at the moment are Oblivion with 600 hours (Holy crap I played that game way too much over the last few years). Morrowind with 250 hours. Dragon Age with 96 hours. All of which have a fantasy setting. Mass Effect I and II come in close with 70 and 51 hours respectively.

And I consider myself a casual gamer =/

I love sci-fi or medieval, as long as there is some form of broadsword, hyper-phase blade or sharp melee weapon, I'm there!
I love swords.

the Warcraft style, a mix of technology and magic is always better than straight Sci-Fi or straight Fantasy.

Planescape: Torment had probably the best setting of any RPG I've played. I guess it was just general fantasy with a heavy dose of darkness and surrealism.

I do also like the Final Fantasy VI-VII-VIII-XIII kind of melding of Sci-Fi and fantasy with a bit of steampunk in some instances. And FFIX was less Sci-Fi but still pure awesome. Ditto X.

I prefer sci-fi just because it tends to be more original. Mass Effect 2 held my attention, while Dragon Age Origins was just a painful mess of cliches from the word go.

ME2: a selection of interesting alien species to interact with.
DAO: elves and dwarves again.
ME2: a nasty and mysterious race from the darkest part of the galaxy with a hidden agenda.
DAO: some nasty orcish demons, fuck-a-doodle-doo.

I like Lord of the Rings, but damn does Tolkein have a lot to answer for.

That said, I prefer fantasy books to sci-fi. It's a shame we can't get the same diversity fantasy books do among fantasy games.

I like fantasy settings like FF7 and maybe the original FF setting (for example FF9) even more. At the moment I'm really enjoying Fallout 3's post-apocalyptic setting. It's something about the everyday hardness of living and surviving in fallout. Sometimes you might just feel like helping someone out.
