Yeah, Halo: Reach had good A.I, at least on the enemy side. The friendlies.... I can't even list the amount of controllers I've broke to Kat running over me or driving my vehicle off a cliff! Oh yeah, and Jorge was cool except for the fact he acted like a blind Heavy Weapons Guy and was good for little else then a meatshield.
I agree with this. Halo: Reach's enemy AI was quite good. It was good enough to annoy me just enough to keep playing, but Kat, jeez. She really doesn't help the stereotype of bad women drivers.

Arkham Asylum had some pretty damn decent AI in it. Although I started noticing patterns near the end.

Aside from that, stalker. I mean, damn, the blood suckers would hit me in the side and leg it into the bushes. Then they'd do it again, and again, and again. Only reason I survived is because I jumped on a boat and trained my gun on the only way up.

Even then, seeing those eyes charge at you down the boat is... unsettling.

fear 1 has fantastic AI. They pull shit all the time that the enemies in other games can't even begin to dream of.

I thought the original Ghost Recons had some of the best tactical programming. They were smart and had memories that lasted more than 5 seconds.

Sorry OP but I have to disagree with you on Splinter Cell: Conviction. I love the series but this one for me was way too easy. I would take one down and they would investigate and give up after 15 seconds. WTF??? If I kill one of your friends recently, and you can't spot me in 15 seconds, would you go back to your regular patrol? And I would repeatedly kill people in the same spot and the patrol wouldn't get any smarter.

F.E.A.R gets my vote, but I'm convinced that there's not been a single game that has 'smart' AI. It's all relative as far as I'm concerned.

Fights with the clones are the best parts of the game.
Turns out that was pretty much an accident.

Their attempts to Flank and provide covering fire was more do to the "two ways to any place" level design rather than the AI itself. That is why the enemies in the Condemned games (made by the same company) are complete morons.

Left 4 Dead though I'm not sure if it was the AI that was good or the strategic spawning that was good... damn smokers.

I'd have to go with Crysis 2. I'm not really certain, but I'll say this: they made quite the first impression. Once, early in the game, I got complacent and the AI actually went around an alley and flanked me. It was my fault for letting that happen, of course, but I hadn't seen anything quite like it in a shooter before.

It is a little bit of both.. The AI director was very good strategically imo and the special zombie AI's really are fun since they know how to retreat and take advantage.

The Left 4 Dead 2 survivor A.I act like 8 year olds playing on mommy's Windows 98, but the infected are ruthless on expert. They coordinate attacks better than humans.

The best I've encountered personally is probably in the Fear games. They flank, they take cover, they temporarily retreat when hurt, they almost never fall for my corner camping (in fact, they'll usually just toss a grenade around the corner instead), and my flashlight is liable to alert them to my presence. In fact, I'm a hell of a lot more likely to use suicidal Zerg-rushing tactics than they are, so I'll readily admit that they're better tacticians than me.

FEAR games for pure combat A.I.
Arma II for tactical overland combat.
For realistic human reactions, STALKER.
For reminding us all that computer scripts are only as intelligent as the people that make them....

I'd have to say the lunatics from Dead Rising 2.

Gah, I hated them. My first real encounter was in CoP in the swamp. Three of the bastards. Used up a ridiculous amount of my ammo.

I don't think Crysis 2 has the best AI because they always get out of cover when you are trying to shoot them and they always charge at you in the open.

I was most surprised by the A.I. in STALKER Call of Pripyat.

Once I was to invade a building with many mercs in it.
I came stealthy until I reached a door on that building, and I threw a grenade through that door which alarmed them.
I moved back and went to cover behind a rock, having my weapon zoomed to that door waiting for them to come out one by one,as most enemies do in most shooters.
Only one came out and I killed him.
As I waited for the others, they wouldn't come and I said "WTF ? Are they pussies ? All of them afraid of just me ?"
But guess what ?
They understood my trick, and they went out of the building from other doors, and while I was sniping to the door waiting for them they went all the way around and flanked me,and then I started being hit.
I said "WTF?" again.
I zoomed out and I saw them having me flanked and they where shooting me from so many angles!

They came out from other doors, and they waited until they are many so everybody started shooting me at the same time instead of having to fight them one by one as I do in most other fpss.

That's what I meant by 'blind'. Also, both my friend and I kind of suck at RSV2 (though we pretend otherwise). And in retrospect, our being flanked every damn time is probably less about the AI and more those freaking enemy spawns.
