Which Valve game to play first?

Well against my better judgment I bought the Valve collection now let me explain what I mean by "better judgment". So far Yahtzee has mentioned liking Deus Ex, Portal, and the Prince of Persia trilogy (I know there is more but these are the ones I bought or tried). I dislike all of them basically. I have come to the conclusion that me and Yahtzee have exact opposite in games. Yahtzee at least likes all of Valve's games. Why I bought the Valve collection knowing this I will never figure out but I have it so my question (if for some reason you clicked this without reading the title[how did you do that by the way?]) is which one should I play first? Considering I have all of them for the time being one thought was start from the beginning with Half life but I'm incredibly indecisive so I come to you because I have no social life (partial sarcasm).

P.S. Yes I was thinking of making a poll with this but there is too many titles to list and my patience is thin. I also realize the irony of this with typing so much.

Portal, because: 1. its super short 2. its pretty awesome 3. it's not really linked to any story, so you're not committing to a long play-time with sequels and such. Unless you're not really into thinky-puzzle type games.
Left 4 Dead 2 is my other favourite (but I guess it makes sense to start with the first one), though its better playing with friends. Unless you're not shy about using the mic with strangers.

Like I said I disliked Portal. It was free for a short time when steam was released on macs and I tried it then. Aside from it was never fun for me after about an hour I ended up in a rediculous situation where there was no way out alive so I don't plan on going back. I can at least see the quality in it but I just don't enjoy it.

Hard question.

Give Team Fortress 2 a try, every person I've had play it (at least eight) enjoyed it and wanted to replay it.

The worst part is I read you saying you didn't like it, then forgot by the time I got to replying.

Portal or Half-Life 2 since they were the first ones I played, and their the ones that get the most attention. Even if you don't like them at least you can say you've played them.

All is forgiven then. Especially since that sounds like something I would do about 60% of the time.

half life series is incredibly good but long and updates slower then a turtle on its back.

left 4 dead if you want to get into lots of zombie killy action that requires teamwork.

team fortress 2 is probably the best multiplayer they have out right now but if you have never played it before then prepare to get wiped in your first few tries since anyother previous fps experience won't come over that well due to the massive differences in play styles. its like comparing dwarf fortress and minecraft.

counter strike source if you want more fps multiplayer but again its much more "twitchy" then most fps's so you might take a while to adapt.

can't say anything for day of defeat since i have never played it

hope this helps

Half Life 1. It and Portal are Valve's only worthwhile games. The rest can go die in a fire somewhere.

for half life 1 thats assuming he can get past the graphics and sometimes crap game mechanics. i had no problem myself since my nostalgia kicked in and forced me through it on a recent play over but its not the best game to start with. he's also said he didnt like portal already.

TF2 I reckon. If you're after raw fun. It pwns ^^
If you're after a good storyline and characters etc, then Half-life. Probably the second, I've only played the original and the Episodes, apparently HL2 has better storylines than those.
Counter-strike if you want the 'realism' approach.
Or L4D2 if you want... durr, a zombie game. L4D1 has no melee weapons, making it the biggest failure of all time.
Portal's obviously more of a puzzle game, but it has it's intense moments.

See, this is how not to be biased.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
depends what kind of game you like, if your wanting a game that is more of a roller coaster then halflife2 episode 2, if you want one that is a journey then half life 2, or the original half life... but really valve games might just not be for you

they do have a rather distinctive play style that some people just dislike

but you could always do l4d2, that one rocks
