oh SURE I can find it amusing enough, but I still dont agree and most of time I woulnt be a dick like that...(unless I did it unintentionally by getting really annoyed and fighting back with all the venom I could muster...you knwo fi my patience was pushed enough)

but again, I wont intentionally adopt that behaviour, I'll just use mute if it bothers me that much, and respond by playing the game and winning
There is nothing wrong with wanting to be civil, but in the face of vitriolic contempt you must forgive me for having neither the desire nor the patience. Besides, I enjoy upsetting people, and winning is twice as satisfying when you know the person you're repeatedly killing hates you. I don't know what you're intending to achieve through this discussion, short of making me aware I'm a massive jerk. The effort is appreciated, but I'm sorry to say I already knew that. But seeing as you are such a considerate and civil person yourself, would it kill you to use punctuation and proof read your posts?

What I was intending to acheive in this dissucssion (if you must know) was that I wanted to understand the mindset/reasoning behined thease things. I can't seem to grasp somtimes why people act like this, games or otherwise.

I wouldnt object if most people did it for the right reasons, instead of using it as a badge of honor. To be used to hold over the heads of others.
In all my time on the internet, I've never actually seen somebody hold themselves above others because they defended a girl. In real life, yeah it does happen but to use something like that on the internet is just folly. Especially since you can never really know for sure if somebody is a female.

You must really visit some silly forums.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone be obnoxious about their choice to defend a woman, based on her gender. I'm sure there's people who do it to receive praise/phone numbers, but it's not as common a phenomenon. It's (arguably) less destructive than the alternative, where people attack you specifically for your gender.

I'm all for treating humans like humans, and trolls like trolls.

It's because we are pathetic, impotent people in real life who seek the bastion of the internet in an attempt to make other people feel more worthless than we feel. Once you've sampled enough shit you get the need to dish it out, maybe start a franchise. It really is untenable behaviour akin to schoolyard bullying, born of an inferiority complex. I figure if I keep it up I'll eventually be able to shake the guilt I feel when I act like an asshole to someone who turns out to be a nice person. I'd rather accidentally be mean to someone who doesn't deserve it than accidentally be nice to someone who turns out to be a dickhead, and feel like an idiot as a result.

On the subjest of grammar, you clearly have a solid grasp of the language. You just need to take a moment to look through what you've written. Everyone makes errors when they type. You seem quite nice, but messy writing like that comes across as inconsiderate, gives the impression that you didn't put much effort into your post, and generally gives people an excuse to dismiss you off hand, which would be unfortunate.

Edit: Oh, and a lot of these people take false pride in their gaming abilities as basically the only thing they're good at, so they get mad when they feel like you're depriving them of the success they feel they deserve in at least this aspect of their lives.

Who else noticed the original poster is being very hypocritical? He's created a thread defending women in which the message of said thread is "defending people devalues their humanity".

Sorry dude, but you are coming across as a white knight who is trying to convince people he is not a white knight. That just seems a whole lot worse.

White Knight Syndrome

n. A personality characteristic found in most males that lead them to:
.
.
.
3. Follow the dying code of chivalry and generally act like a nice guy.
So you would rather men didn't treat women decently and act like a nice person?

TLDR: Do not defend someone because they are a woman, defend someone because they are a person.
That's all very well and on the whole I agree with the fact that women can be treated poorly on the internet when they are singled out as women, because they are women but on the occasion that a female storms onto the internet and says "LOOOK! I am a woman!!11" then they are going to get attention and they know it. At that point they have no right to complain.
I've heard this idea so many times. Let me say this:

Male is not normal, female abnormal. Male is not the default, female the exception. Asserting that you are a woman, or saying something that makes it obvious you are a woman is not "showing off" or "attention whoring" or "flaunting" your gender. It is being who you are.

Men do not get accused of attention seeking for saying "I'm a bloke" or talking in a way that makes it obvious that they are male. I'm sick of this double standard.
What he is saying, is that it's is frustrating when someone comes onto the Internet, into a conversation and then boldly and loudly states that they are a woman, for no other reason than that they feel the need to do so. He isn't stating that you can't be proud of your gender, he is saying unless it's relevant, it is a pointless attention seeking statement and you can deny as much as you want, but any statement like this, is always done with the intention of grabbing attention.

So basically, take the middle ground: don't objectify and treat them like tits and ass... but don't go extremist in the other direction and suffocate with over-protection either. It's *the extremism* that's the problem, so stop it. Yep, I can live with that.

But what about defending a friend on the basis that they're being attacked for something?

Alas, we don't live in a perfect world...

Wow, OP, nice try. This is very ironic.

I honestly try to remain nice on the web, and will help out anyone. I'm not stripping anyone of their humanity (wtf), I'm just lending a hand.

Just the other day on Gears 3 this little kid was being berated by all the too-cool-for-school high schoolers because his voice was high pitched. The kid had to be near eleven maybe twelve. I normally discourage those kids, from playing online, but he was very quiet. Very polite. Not a damned potty-mouth with something to prove like most of his age. He just wanted to help out the team. And he never took the bait of any of the "past your bed time" and other insults. After getting annoyed I finally told the high schoolers to shut the hell up and play. They did. The little boy thanked me and we kept playing.

I've done this with adult men, and with women. More with women because they are the ones that get picked on the most. I have no need for female attention online. I have enough at home. When people get picked on, it annoys me. That's it. I'm no "white knight." I dislike chivalry, etc, etc.

And know what I get in response 99% of the time?

"Thanks." Not, "You sexist pig. My humanity is gone."

allright fair enough, next time I see a woman walking behind me instead of holding the door for them or anyone else I'll slam it in her face. Next time I see a woman who can't lift her groceries (cause of surgery, a baby, or just being shit fuck tired) I'll walk on by. The next time I see a *removed cause it left a bad taste in my mouth.*

After all I'd hate to be sexist.

So essentially, be the good guy and not the nice guy. I can see where there might be a problem with that, but I think I get it.

Still, I probably would defend anyone in need, regardless of the situation. Not sure if I'd fall in love with them, though.

i agree with the op completely. in the internet, feminism seems to almost be seen as an insult. i will proudly state that im a feminist and i have seen many threads where females are shot down for simply saying that something bothers them and indeed i have been attacked just for defending feminism. it has gotten to the point where im almost am afraid to even touch feminist topics, except on sites that are set up as communities for feminists. sadly, as moviebob has indicated before, this site is far from a safe place for feminists and i can predict that this thread will not get very much love

Whenever a man picks up his phone, it's pretty easy to tell whether he's talking to a man or a woman. It's ingrained in our biology. We will threat potential mating partners differently.

I don?t agree with the op, and I do not see feminism as an insult. I do not state that I?m a feminist because I?m not, and I?ve yet to see a thread on this forum where females are shot down simply because they brought up something that bothers them (there were a few that were shot down because of their reasons though, so it was the content and not the mere act of bringing it up that was its downfall). I would like to posit that it was not your act of defending feminism that caused you to be attacked, but your ability to do so? Feminism is a hot topic and unless you go into the debate with sound reasons that you can back up you?ll be attacked.

It?s a shame that you won?t touch feminist topics, if you?re just preaching to the choir you will never get anything done, you?ll just get a bunch of angry people more angry. You say it?s unsafe, and I haven?t seen what moviebob said, but how exactly is this an unsafe place? Because people have strong opinions and disagree with you? Or do people openly attack you (which would result in them getting banned).

No this thread did not get much love, it was poorly worded, hypocritical, and didn?t even go into why exactly being a white knight is so bad.

Please don?t see this as an attack, I simply disagree with you and I wish to express my own opinions.
