Since MM is nearing to a close lets do something nostalgic. Tell us what your nostalgic developers are, as in you played a lot of their games or played their games many times when ye were a weee lad or lass

For me it be : Lionhead, Bungie, Bioware, and Westwood Studios. Ah good times.
So what are your nostalgic developers?

Nintendo, Bioware, Bethesda, Capcom, Konami, Bungie, Pandemic, SEGA, Squaresoft, Rare... lists goes on and on.

These days the only thing I can trust is that Bethesda will continue to make TES games that I will more often than not enjoy. My brand loyalty has been irrevocably destroyed this console generation.

Squaresoft...Final Fantasy used to be a good series before they merged and became Square-Enix.

The 90's were fucking awesome for video games. Every time I see that quote "The 90's sucked" I rage.

Not just Final Fantasy either, I love Chrono Trigger and Cross. I'm sad there hasn't been a new game in that series yet happy since they would probably ruin it somehow (due to my unrealistic expectations).

Westwood, Squaresoft, Core Design, Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Oddworld Inhabitants, Blizzard, Capcom and SEGA. There're so many games from these developers that I still regularly play through.

Because back then they didn't have fancy graphics and world design to hide behind...developers actually had to make GOOD games with (at least in the case of RPGs) GOOD stories if they wanted people to buy their product.

And let's not forget one of the greatest RPGs of all time: Secret of Mana.

Pfft. You realize people were saying the EXACT SAME THING in the 90's about 80's games, right? In fact the 90's marked the advent of the video card and the CD ROM, so we had the inevitable glut of flashy, trashy nonsense to take advantage of the new technology.

Don't be a Luddite. There are great games in every generation, the available technology has little and less to do with it. Origin Systems created some of the most system crippling games around, always on the cutting edge graphically, but they were also revolutionary and years ahead of their time in terms of game play.

Hey, my MOTHER was a Luddite!!!

:p Just kidding, I never said that they weren't saying the same thing in the 90's about games in the 80's, I'm just pointing out that - in general - as game technology improves games begin to become more and more about "What can we do with all this stuff?" and less about "What do we want to do with this game?" FF13 is a perfect example of this. Granted, I've never actually played it since I gave up on the franchise after 10, but from what I've heard it's a pretty visually beautiful game that...plays itself.

Personally I think the SNES generation had the best balance of game design and game play, but beyond that my point remains that as technology improves, story telling declines (in general). Look at Rage as another great example. BEAUTIFUL graphics and game design, yet surprisingly linear with a weak story and an ending that makes ME 3's ending look blindingly brilliant.

Nonsense. People hack on Bioware, and the ending of ME3 was a travesty, but storytelling in gaming has done nothing but improve by leaps and bounds. It still has a long way to go, and Planescape is still a depressing standout, but we've gone from BAD DUDES to Bioshock. We've gone from Gauntlet to Diablo. We've gone from Wizardry to Witcher. The problem is that your expectations are getting higher. And that's a good problem for the medium to have.

There are, of course, exceptions to what I've said. The only absolute in the universe is that there are no absolutes in the universe (and that statement is, itself, an absolute :p). However, as I said previously, I'm speaking in a general sense.

Now, having stopped myself half-way through my next counter-argument, I'll simply point out that we're officially getting into the realm of opinion-based argument and as such I suggest we simply call it quits here. :3

*ducks!*

Hey now, I've already fulfilled my "Make Myself Look Like An Ass" quota for the day! I don't need to get into a "MAH OPINION B BETTER DAN YERS!" argument right now!

The 90s DID NOT SUCK. The 2000's on the other hand...what the hell is wrong with you, Square Enix? Naughty Dog, how could you kill Crash? And you, Crystal Dynamics, please give Lara a rest and do some other projects. Indeed, stuff like Legacy of Kain. Good.
