who else doesn't buy games on release day/week anymore?

I never get games on release. In fact, I haven't played a single game from this year yet. This is for two reasons:

1. I retro game a lot.

2. I am a tightwad.

Nice to see I'm not the only one here! I'm actually on the verge of buying Call of Duty 4 since it's $17 at my work this week. It'll be my first copy. As for new games in general, I won't buy about 99% of new games that are released on day/week one. I plan to grab Skyrim and Saint's Row 3 when those are put out, if not at midnight than that day.

And like Spud, I loves me some retro games. For the same price as a brand new, triple-A title I can grab several games from yesteryear.

I have no reason to hate on From Software, they seem like good people. They'll be getting my $60 in about 7 hours.

Not anymore. Ive bought into the hype of games too many times.

Except for really really big stuff like skyrim, halo or gow. Cod would be one of those too if i was still a fan, but unless they adress the balance issues that keep popping up since after the first modern warfare i wont be getting the next one.

I really thought this thread was going to be about not buying early due to not wanting to be unpaid QA testers, since games can't seem to be released anymore without SEVERAL game fixing patches anymore.

Sadly Dark Souls looks like it still needs a few more patches judging from many vids of infinite consumable item spamming, bugged magic shield spell that makes you invincible instead of reinforcing your shield, and midcast spell swapping so you can cast a low charge spell more by way of a large pool primer spell.

Oh and the widely reported and documented total game freezes that are still rather frequent after 3 patches.

Despite all that, I've got mine arriving tomorrow.

I generally have a quite year, buying cheaper or pre owned games, but once November hits I normally have four or five games that are day of release purchases for me.

I only buy the games I really love on release day now (pretty much just mass effect, gears of war and borderlands). Anything else I will wait and get it cheaper down the road.

However, I will still rent the game from love film so that I can try it out before making the decision to buy. This way I get the game for a few weeks cheaper than I would from a high street rental store for a few days.

This also allows me to judge how worth buying the game is, depending on how much I enjoy it and if I complete it during the rental. If I do complete it before sending it back, I generally will not go out and buy it.

I have the disposable income to buy pretty much whatever games i want on release day, the most recent one being Deus Ex.

However hardly a month after the purchase the game went from £50 new to £18 on amazon. and the DLC pack is, what, £3.50?

Buying brand new often feels like a waste of money to me. I only ever do so if I am really looking forward to the game, eg, BF3 and Saints Row 3 are day 1 purchases for me, but will wait for the price drop on everything else because in a few weeks that game will be about 20-50% off.

I never used to buy games on release. However, the past few months, every game I've bought has been a day one purchase whether it was through Amazon or at Gamestop.

I buy from the sales. Just because it's cheaper, and keeping the PC up to date is cheaper too.

(although I bought Red Orchestra 2 recently, that was an exception)

Dude, I've bought 2 games in my life. The first was L4D about 3 months after it came out (For 12$), and Minecraft.

I've played dozens of games although ^_^.

I'll get games on launch if they REALLY peak my interest: Skyrim is the one for this year, I think.

Pre-ordering is more regular for me, although I haven't done that for a while.

I *did* pre-order a music album though. It comes out in a week. I can't bloody wait!

It's "pique" my interest, not "peak" my interest. I'm not trying to call you out in particular, but I've seen this a bunch of times in this thread and figured it wouldn't hurt anyone if I pointed it out.

If it's a game i've been waiting for and really want to play like Deus Ex, Skyrim and ToR, then i'll get them on release day.

Anything else i'll wait a couple of months. If I wait a bit 9 times out of 10 I can get what would have been a £40 game for about £10 on Amazon.

...I wait a while, I get 'deluxe' editions a year or so later for $20 with all the bells and whistles

OR I can spend $60 to have my wallet raped by a succession of new DLC each few months....go figure

I think 3 things are needed before a game is bought on launch.

Cash
Access (I really cannot think of much better for the third one)

If I have wanted the game for ages, Have the disposable cash at hand and the internet is not playing up I will probally get release.
Or the alternitive

I think there have been some games I got when I just happened to be there on release, monster hunter and mad world, I got a free t-shirt with it (Probally best part of the game)

Ive only bought 3 games at full price cause i really wanted them, otherwise its a case of buy say 1 game now or the same game and maybe another game if i wait a few months.
For the life of me i dont know why people pay full price for more than the odd game every now and then...

The only games I can remember buying on release week within the past few years are Starcraft 2, Mega Man Zero Collection, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Reckoning and Heart of the Swarm might end up being added to that list.

I buy a game after I've established that it doesn't suck.

Sometimes this takes time.

Very rarely. I've got the money, but the good/suck ratio the past few years has gotten WAY too close to zero for me to take risks at $60, so unless it's something that really catches my interest (Catherine was the only one this year), I don't buy until a friend (usually my kid brother) does and lets me try it out.

That said, unless Torchlight II makes its deadline, Catherine would be the only 2011 game I buy in 2011. Sad...
