Haven't played Cross, but Chrono Trigger is 10000x better than FF7, and quite a lot better than any other FF game.

I'm not the biggest fan of FF games but i have a firm belief that FF7 is by far the worst.
Well I wouldn't go that far. : l
Well i haven't played 11 or 12 so it's in the bottom 3 at least xD

Is everyone else finding that older rpg's were more imaginative. Vagrant Story, Chrono cross/Trigger, Xenogears. Its kind of good for me though because I haven't played Xenogears or Chrono Trigger and plan on doing so.

Both are overrated, though I honestly loved the materia system.

As the trend goes, Chrono Trigger trumps them both.

Chrono Cross has one of the absolute best stories to ever come out of Squaresoft.
Every part of the game was epic, and polished...with the exception of one minor detail: the immense cast.

It's really a shame too, because none of the characters are bad in design, it's just that there are too many of them. It's a classic case of spreading your material too thin.
It detracts from the experience when you trip over all of these oddball characters, but they don't really contribute much to the plot. Hell, you will have maybe 3 characters total that are critical to the plot in your party at any given time.

On Topic: Both FF7 and Chrono Cross are great games, and it really isn't fair to compare them.
The moods, styles and stories for each are wildly different.

Well if you have to ask, I'd say Final Fantasy VI is better than VII, and Chrono Trigger is better, at least plot wise, than Chrono Cross.

BUT, there's a reason why I keep listening to Yasunori Mitsuda's sountrack for Chrono Cross. One the best rpg soundracks, EVER.

It saddens me that there has been no successor to the Chrono series, and there may not be one, ever.

I loved Chrono Cross. In fact, I sometimes still listen to the soundtrack. It's not really worth comparing a colorful island world to a futuristic steam punky one, though. From what I remember, the combat was quite fun and challenging enough to my 12 year old self. Not so sure I like having a list of 100 playable characters combat-wise, since only a handful are really viable, but its Dickensian flair was definitely to the game's charm.
Unfortunately, never got a chance to play Trigger.

Chrono Cross was good, I loathed the combat in it though. It is a little sad that the several characters make it so only plot based ones are important.

There is one aspect of it that puts it ahead of any other rpg in my heart though, and that is the soundtrack. It's absolutely -fantastic-.

Sea of Ruin and the title sequence in particular.

You've got a good point there, as jrpgs go, they're all good. Now if you want to see bad, just take a glance upon 'Shadow Madness' a bad western attempt to cash on FFVII's popularity.

And what's up with your animated avatar? It's mesmerizing... where is it from?

I need to play CC still But I think--because of pure nostalgia--nothing could be better than FFVII or FFVIII for that matter.

It's not going to remind you of chrono trigger very much, i'm afraid. It's good, the main focus is traveling to two parallel universes rather than time traveling to several different times. There's also a -lot- of characters, about 40 or so, they're in varying degrees of usefulness. They do manage to make them all have their individual personalities though.

Though hopefully in a not so spoilish way, I can tell you that is is a continuation of the plot of Chrono trigger, just in a not very apparent way for much of the game.

Oh, also, if you try it out, turn down Kidd when she first offers to help you, and say that you dont know what to do when she gets in trouble. You get some great characters if you're slightly mean to her.

The protagonist is not some depressed teenager that pretends he knows what is going on (in fact that seems to be a theme for FF games, Tidus, Cloud, Vaan Lightning are all the same)
tidus and vaan really aren't that depressed. well, tidus does get depressed sometimes, but for a good reason which i wont give away because of spoilers. anyway, since when was 2/12 main characters, 4/12 if you go by what you said, considered a theme?

anyway, final fantasy is good, chrono cross is good, chrono trigger is good, there all good, i don't really care since they are all good.
Those are the most (IMO) recognizable characters in the series and they all have this "I know what the hell is going on yet still act melodramatic for no reason" attitude. Cloud acts like a noncaring hero, Tidus behaves like an idiot trying to impress Yuna and Lightning is the female version of Cloud. Vaan is well... Anyway, all the characters in CC (I have about 10 or so so far) all act normally for there place in society. I don't see any moody Shinra soldiers in Crisis Core, hell I don't even know how the **** Cloud could get that attitude.

Good thing I made this thread, I would have never know about Trigger. I going to try and find that game somewhere.

Chrono Cross was great, FF VII was great too. While they both were a product of the same era, Chrono Cross came out much later than FF VII, so it only makes sense that the graphics would be better.
They're hard to compare because the mood and themes of each game are so vastly different. One is a dimensional merry-go-round in a tropical paradise, while the other is the Armageddon catastrophe in a bleak, dystopian future.
I also thoroughly enjoyed Trigger, but that was a different era in gaming entirely, and it makes comparison nearly impossible.

I loved Chrono Cross, well what I played of it anyway, for some reason they never released it in Europe which sucks so I had to use a poor quality imported copy that wouldn't let me past a certain point.
But what I played of it I loved and I would say it was way better than any FF game, story wise it has it beat hands down and gameplay wise it was so far ahead of its time.

SPOILER WARNING FROM HERE ON!!!!!!!!!!

I also really liked the choice system, if I remember correctly there is a point where one of the main characters Kid was poisoned or something and you could either go to another dimension and get the antidote or do nothing. Helping her is the right thing to do obviously but doesn't really reward you for your hard work, however if instead you simply choose to do nothing you are rewarded with a really good new character who is one of the strongest in the game.
Simply Amazing.

Chrono Cross is alright... So is Chrono Trigger.

Better than FFVII, but not FFVI... or Terranigma.

Chrono Cross? FUCK YEAH!

Now that's the way to do a sequel; involved with the plot of the first and contributing to it without completely ape-ing it.
