Since the next series of Doctor Who is going to be finally revealing her secrets I was wondering if anyone had any theories on who/what River Song is?

She's an incredibly annoying plot device, thats what she is. But in all seriousness I have no idea. It was hinted that she would kill the Doctor at some point, but it also hinted they were married at some point or something. You know what, i'm going with the theory that I just now created that she is a timelord, I don't care how unlikely that seems.

My Best Friend raised a good point the other week... What if River and Amy are the same person but River is Amy in the future, now hear me out there are similarities between their personalities, the way they are around the Doctor and I don't know if anyone saw but River gave Amy her diary at Amy's wedding to help her remember the Doctor despite the fact that she should have forgotten the Doctor as well of course it could mean she's something even more mysterious but it does fit and would be a kick arse plot twist

0_O Hm.

That would...actually fit quite well. Heh, that's interesting.

OT: Either what Jaing said or she's the Doctor's future wife who kills him. Or a random woman. OR she's that creepy voice saying SILENCE WILL FALL :)

I've said that from the beginning. At first, it was just a feeling, but as the series progressed there seemed to be more evidence supporting this line of thought. I really don't wish to type out all of the reasons, but I will give you one point that really sticks out in my mind.

River was taught how to fly the TARDIS by the Doctor, however, the Doctor was not with her at the time she learned, he was somewhere else. Now, remember when Amy had to fly the TARDIS in the episode The Lodger? It fits perfectly with River's explanation.

Of course, I would love it to be just some random woman with no real connection to the Doctor other than they know each other an developed a friendship. With all the guessing and speculation, it would be brilliant if it was no one.

Frankly, I think this is the most likely explanation. Considering that her first appearance was nearly two years before Amy showed up, I don't think they could have planned for them to be the same person, and seeing as she's essentially Moffat's personal sub-plot, I'm not sure he would be willing to change that.

She must be someone important though, and I suspect she is/ was a Time Agent like Jack Harkness, or something similar, otherwise she wouldn't have the knowledge to work with the Doctor as she does. It's pretty heavily implied that they have a romantic relationship, what with her saying that Future!Doctor cried before she went to the Library, and her claiming to know the Doctor's real name. It's also all but outright stated in Flesh And Stone that she's going to kill him; I suspect that this will be because he's going to go mad again like in The Waters of Mars, because Future!Doctor clearly didn't hate her when she left for the Library.

We'll find out soon enough, I'm sure. Although the fact remains that a lot of the appeal of the character lies in the mystery, and once that's gone there may not be much left.

Of course, the ultimate dream outcome would be that she's actually River Tam in disguise.

The Doctor's wife who ends up killing him.

I mean of course there's going to be more to it than that but that's the gist of what's been revealed thus far.

Ugh... to be honest I'm beyond caring. The whole "spoilers" thing stopped being cute the second time she said it.

This is pretty much what I think...she's the Doctor's wife or girlfriend in the future.
But seeing as how the Doctor's daughter is still out there, I wonder if she'll be back.

Also, the mystery of why the Tardis exploded and the crack haven't been explained.
