Eh Fair enough, but then again can't say I ain't sexist, I find woman and men badass. Course if you want a more grounded bad Ass I guess I give it to Good old Laura Croft for fighting a Dinosaur (yeah old school)

Then again thanks to feminists on here I'm obligated to mention female badasses or I'm somehow sexist for not saying it. Just saying LOL
Fighting a dinosaur? Please, Turok extinguished the dinosaurs.

Cartoon: Wile E. Coyote has survived hell a bajillion times more than anybody else.

Anime: Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist. Because that's the only anime I've ever watched besides Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh, and what am I gonna do? Choose Lance or Seto Kaiba? Ya, right.

Gaming: Kratos. He has no other emotions than 'Kill the Gods!'.

Movies: Jason Statham. The Crank series are enough to win any debate on this matter.

Television: Crixus from the Spartacus: Blood and Sand series. Too bad his end was at the hands of a pussy.

Literature: Snowman from Oryx and Crake. The guy's experiences make you believe that suicide is a very reasonable option yet it's never really on the table for him.

Movies: Ip Man. Damn this guy knows how to carry himself in a fight, and I'm not even going into the whole fighting against oppression and symbol of national pride business. Hell, the guy mentored Bruce Lee so instant badass.
Which Ip Man? After Donnie Yen's portrayal (2008), everybody and their mother tried cashing in on the Ip Man "legacy" and now there's at least 10 big budget films about him. Very few people (just whoever was in that tight martial arts circle) knew of Ip Man before Donnie Yen's movie, and he actually wasn't that important of a mentor to Bruce Lee as they tried making him out to be. The "important" fights that Ip Man is portrayed to fight in the movies were actually fought by his students. But that would make a boring story so they made him an unstoppable kung fu master rather than the opium addict he actually was.

Anime:

Despite Naruto being a trainwreck, the character Pain was pretty damn neat. He was emotionless, cold, strong, and thought he was the good guy.

I'm not even sure how to describe him other than he had Gravitas to him. Just listen to this theme song.

Your anime badass is wrong and you should feel bad:

Nothing but arse kicking.
You are the biggest fanboy in the history of ever.

Go away God Damnit xD

And besides, even within One Piece YOU'RE wrong!

Clearly this guy is the best. I'll entertain no notions to the contrary.

Seriously lets see who we can come up to be our biggest bad asses

Gaming: I'm giving this one to Bayonetta, why, she took on a being that was at least 3 times the size of a planet, threw it through space and into the sun. Yeah that pretty much seals the deal to make her a bad ass

Sorry to interrupt, but I didn't think that AsurasEyes was sexist at all- Toph is on the list.

Even if all of these characters were male, then that's a personal preference. I feel like this is about personal favourite badasses, really, as to determine who is actually the 'greatest badass' in those categories, you would have to consider them in their narrative, their body count, their skillsets, etc. And it's all quite subjective.

...

As to the question, I'll need some time to think on it, but a rough list is as follows:

Cartoon - (say Archer just say Archer come on you know it HE knows it)... Archer. Whooooooo!

Anime - I guess Vash the Stampede was pretty cool, in Trigun. Which is odd, because he always felt that guns were not the answer. Actually, I think that's what I liked about him the most. He was so skilled, that he solved most (read:most) of his problems in a Borderlands-style bad lands of outlaws and warlords, without guns (or shooting to kill, I suppose).

Gaming - This is a tricky one, because in alot of games, the characters are bad asses, carry big guns/swords/ninja moves. I'll have to come back to this one, but Kratos seems a likely top contender. Even though I hate the character.

Usually, In gaming, I find a character a badass if I can really feel 'cool' playing that character's role. Like, Gordon Freeman isn't a badass to me, he's just a dude surviving. But maybe that makes him badass? Whereas Kratos was apparently givan all this stuff that makes him a badass or something. I honestly feel badass when I can play a huge, inhuman monster, but don't enjoy playing a human who is a huge monster, if you follow me.

The characters in Borderlands all seem pretty badass, too- I dunno.

Movies - This is the hardest one yet!
...Snake Plissken.
No, wait- Zula, from Conan the Destroyer. What was the name of the protagonist from the Fifth Element? oh, right- Milla Jovovich. In fact, Milla probably should be on everyones top five list, as her and Kate Beckinsale represent women kicking ass in film for the last decade. Though Gina Carano should not be considered lightly. That is, if kicking ass makes a badass.
...
Nope, what am I thinking! It's got to be 'Manco' from "For a Few Dollars More".
...
Pennywise the Clown. Dammit!
...
The Dude?

In summation, I don't think I know what 'badass' means.
Sorry, everyone.

Let see (without naming the characters already mention above as much I want to mention them again)-

Cartoon- Toph from Avatar: The Last Airbender. She maybe a small blind girl but she is the reigning champion of that pro Earth bending, part of Team Avatar saved her teammate countless time and give the villain and grunt a run of their monies and she introduce Metal Bending!

Anime- Kenpachi Zaraki from Bleach. Sure Bleach suck now but he is still a badass!

Gaming- Torgue from Borderlands

Movies- Frank from Sin City.

Cartoon
Immediately after her first appearance, she became my favourite character in the series. What can I say, a blind earthbender who can see using the vibrations in the ground and is a pretty funny and deep character as well, what's not to love?

Anime
Currently my favourite villain (and anime character) of all time, he's deep, complex and very powerful to the point that he would rather talk to resolve something rather than fight as shown when he took two direct attacks from Netero without even getting hurt and sat back down so they could talk

Gaming
There's a reason why MGS3 is my favourite out of the series, I just have respect for the man, especially after the ending of MGS3 which made me support the actions he took later on in the timeline

Movies
Fight Club is my favourite film and Tyler is the reason for that, it's never a dull moment when he's on screen and his life philosophy is pretty interesting, if you want to know well....

Cartoons: Vikktor from Lackadaisy. The guy's a complete badass, even in only the 10 or so strips he's commited at least 5 crimes in. Too bad he never really liked symmetry.
http://www.lackadaisycats.com/gallery/1308106718.jpg[img]
Anime: Mio Nanagohara, definetely.
[img]http://i.imgur.com/e9HEZ.jpg

In one episode alone, she beats up a police officer, her only friend, a goat, and an old man just to protect her pornography from the publish eye. Truly a hero to behold and mold your own children after.

Gaming: Although I really dislike the character because of God of War 2+3 where he has simply become a 1-dimensional cut out that likes to rip bunnies heads of, Kratos is a shining example of tostosterone poisoning, and it's awesome.

Movies: That guy from Die Hard. I don't know the guy but him. Yeah, totally him.

Balalaika from Black Lagoon.

While the show is overly grimdark, which also bleeds into her character a bit, she's just such a powerful presence. Half her skin is covered in scars, yet she still carries herself with such class. Whenever she enters a scene she immediately demands your respect and attention.
totally agree, in a show oozing with badass, Balalaika stands head and shoulders above everyone else, even the main characters and surprisingly the crazy maid as well... Balalaika just has that aura of command that one does not fuck with... she does not need to do more then look your way and you're dead... Mama of badassery XD

and since we all seem to agree that the bamf of cartoons is Toph from Avatar: The Last Airbender, here's a piccy of her as an adult, and still such a badass :D

swagger~

and since i can't go into a 'who's awesome' in video games without squealing...

Aya Brea, my childhood heroine and uber badass :3 cause nothing says bitching like literally negating your own death, killing the guy who tried to kill you, and effectively giving him the most swag middle finger around :D

movie? hrm... i'd have to think on that one for awhile... Michelle Rodrigaz or Danny Trejo are definitely up there, just because i love the ridiculous that is Machete Kills...

WHILST THAT IS TRUE garp is not a badass, he lacks the certain something. Also I could drag up a good hundred times as many badass zoro panels.

Yeah, I was referring specifically to the 2008 movie. I am aware of the artistic liberties taken with his life which is why I listed him under movies and not real life. As for the Bruce Lee thing, I guess he did it in some capacity, not sure of the details, but either way I'm not too fussy.

OT: I find Afro Samurai to be badass not only because of how much shit he can take on and still keep on fighting, but also because he's voiced by Samuel L. Jackson!

Games - I'm torn between Joel(Last of Us) and Bigby(Wolf Among Us) but I think I'm giving it to Joel because A) Bigby originated in comics so he can have his own "non-manga or super hero comic" section and B) He's got "powers". Joel is just a dude surviving an apocalypse and the man CAN'T die. Or he won't. Either or, I just think Joel's so freakin' cool. (John Marston gets an honourable mention)

Anime - Can I say Minene Uryuu from Mirai Nikki? With the exception of her Diary, again, she's just a normal chick who's just badass at fighting. She's got a bomb strapped to her heart; that's AWESOME

I'm not good at coming up with "real" badasses, just ones I think are awesome.

Movies - Toooo many to choooooose

TV - ...Daryl Dixon? Removes an arrow from his flesh and spikes it in a Walker. Takes down a tank BY HIMSELF. And I'm sure there's some guy in GoT who's all "Well, he's powerful and strong too and blah blah". Well... I don't watch GoT. I watch Walking Dead. And I think Daryl's one of the biggest badasses in TV
