Who is the most heroic character?

Who do you think is the most heroic character ever? They could have saved the universes to a life. They can be from a game, book, or television show. My most heroic character is ether Commander Shepard or Solid Snake. I chose Shepard because even though no one believes in the Reapers he continues the struggle to save the universe. I also choose Solid snake because in Metal Gear 4 despite his weakening body he fights to the last breath and was also willing to kill himself to keep Foxdie from spreading to the rest of the world.

I'd say...Artyom from Metro 2033. He's like the lone wanderer, sans retardation: he's a naive boy who's never left his home, and one day he's called upon to venture through Hell and back for the sake of his family and the entire human race. He's a hero regardless of what the player does, but in the good ending he even manages to...well, you know what he did. It would've taken courage beyond measure to even make it through the first thirty seconds of his journey, let alone the entire thing; the fact that he even survived makes him one of the greatest video game heroes of all time, and the sexy voice is icing on the cake.

Ramza Beoulve from Final Fantasy Tactics. The true hero of the storyline essentially despite having every single faction, kingdom, rogue element against him. Including the devil himself.

Jon Snow from Song of Ice and Fire. Quite a heroic lad who braves the perils of his battles, remains loyal to his friends and comrads, and came from a rather harsh upbringing as a bastard son of a Lord.

Those are the only two I can think of who merit this title.

This, of course, is just one of many heroes ever described in fiction, but I chose him because he goes through hell and high water to do his duty without getting any recognition for it.He keeps goals for his personal life as well, but these always suffer because of his duty.

Dog from Half-Life 2. He's always there when you really need him, and he'll jump into any fray and tackle any challange (weird alien, strider, entire Combine platoon, etc) without any hesitation.

Of the top of my head, I'd say Ciaphas Cain, from his series of books set in Warhammer 40k. He straight up *admits* to being scared shit-less in many situations, but he does what he needs to do anyway. And after he has the modesty, the balls, to say that the only reason he did something heroic was for some selfish reason. Ex. "Only reason I killed that big alien about to eat you was because it was blocking my route of escape".

Could probably think of someone more heroic, though, if I gave it some more thought.

Even just within DC comics there's more decent people than Batman.
Captain Marvel seriously deserves more props than he gets. He's just a little kid who's been dragged into the whole superhero business against his will and he's holding up fine.

I say Link from Legend of Zelda. He may never spoken but he let his actions does the talking. Also despite being a kid or a farm boy, he had never shown fear nor coward in front of his enemies big or small.

Aeneas, Achilles or Hector

personaly i would go with Aeneas since he was not only a great fighter but he belived in virtue, self control,he founded a city, endured hardship and years of wandering with no home and put his people before himself.
Truly he is a figure we should all emulate.

As for tragic heros i would say Oedipus, he relentlessly believed in the search for truth and sought to save his people from sickness, too bad his search for truth led to his demise.

Seriously though, Mario is the most heroic character, or at least to me. He is a Fat Plumber from Brooklyn, but he still puts life and limb to save a Princess who is only his "Friend" by killing millions of Turtles and Mushroom Monsters. That man is a hero.

John Marston from Red Dead Redemption, equal parts family man to expert killer, who pretty much does anything and everything to save and then protect his family, regardless of the toll it takes on him.

Rockstar games did an excellent job characterising this fellow

But... He has killed people. And when not him, the guy who replaces him after bane breaks his back. His replacement lets people die.

OT: Roland Deschain of The Dark Tower series. Why? Cause's hes the man. And he DID save infinite universes AND realities by saving the tower. He watches his friends and family die, even kills some himself. He sacrifices much, and when you finally end his tail, what happens? well, you get two endings. The unfulfilled ending that lets you think about what happened and decide. Or the real Coda ending, where.. well...
He does it all again, perhaps infinitely, since he's down the travel perhaps infinitely before
