I want to know who here likes metal. And if so, which genres and what bands?
Also, what are your reasons for liking/disliking metal?

You know what's funny? The post I made before this one was all about the search button.

I like some metal but not all. I'm not really sure what genre they are but my favorite is Maximum the hormone.

We already have a thread dedicated to Metal. Please use the search feature.
Yes I saw that but that is why I added the second question.

I like so many different kinds of metal it's silly, but I have pretty wide musical tastes all together. But if I where to single out some favourites I'd have to say:

Thrash - Early Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax etc
Prog - Dream Theatre, Liquid Tension Experiment, maybe Opeth comes into this list
Experimental - Sikth, Tool, etc
Just to name a few....

I like metal for different reasons depending on which band / genre your talking about at the time, so here goes :

Thrash - Because it's balls to the wall metal, great to listen to when your in a bad (pissed off) mood, also great to put on when your playing FPS's.
Prog - I just love how technical they are, the harmonies can be compared to classical music and it's just really interesting to listen to, especially coming from a guitarist's point of view.
Experimental - Similair to prog really, but quite often it's interesting in different ways, like just the overall sound, almost like soundscapes if that makes sense.

Metal threads around here quickly dissolve into dick-waving contests about who's metal band is more obscure/has the most ridiculous name written in a dead language. I don't think there is a single genre of music that attracts quite so many elitist cunts.

That said, I love metal-- though sometimes I'm not 100 percent sure if what I'm listening to is officially considered "metal". The subgenrefication of music makes me sick.

Recently I've been listening to unhealthy amounts of Electric Wizard with a hearty dose of Symphony X. I would probably have to say that my favorite bands are 3 Inches of Blood, Children of Bodom and Demons & Wizards. I generally lean towards the death/power metal spectrum, or so people tell me.

I love the guitar rifts in Metal mostly. I also like when it has meaningful lyrics (even if I can't understand them, haha). All That Remains, The Human Abstract and Killswitch Engage are three of my favourites right now.

I'll second Children of Bodom. What are the others you mentioned like? Similar? I've been searching for some more good metal bands, so I may check them out.

I guess I should put in my own entry.

I predominantly listen to Power Metal. Bands include Helloween, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force, and Blind Guardian.
However I also listen to Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, and Wintersun.
The reason why I like metal is because it fills me with energy and power. If I'm felling down, I just crank up some Helloween(favourite band) and I'm back in business.

Oh, and for those who like melodic death metal, I strongly recommend checking out Wintersun.
