So, having listened to Billy Joel's We Didn't Start The Fire many times, I've often times found myself thinking of more recent things...

The song, for those that don't know, is a long list of various events and people of note or significance of some sort from 1949 to 1989 (Billy Joel's birth till the release of the song). In general I believe it's been said that name any of those things, and people alive during that time period will likely know what you're talking about.

Which brings up my question... if another song was made, from 1989 to 2029, what would be included? Granted it's only 2014 now, but still, think back on the things that happened in the past 25 years, and what sorts of things might show up?

I've thought about it a bit myself, and here's the various things I can think of/remember (Being born in 88 myself).

9/11--I hope I don't need to explain this, it being one of the most notable events in recent American history. I'm just putting it at the top because almost everyone would say it.

Monica Lewinsky--May have spelled the name wrong, but the Clinton scandal did pick up a lot of heat for Clinton and nearly impeached him.

Obama--First black president of the United States. I'd say that's pretty notable, even outside of things like Obamacare and other events.

War in Iraq--It lasted more years than it should have after 9/11, but it was all anyone could talk about for a long time.

Osama/Al Quaida--Capturing the guy was pretty much a big notable event for America, I'd say.

Michael Jackson--Two or things could happen with this guy... his death, or the whole debacle with the lawsuits involving him and little children. The latter appeared in all the papers, and the former I still personally remember from how much people kept talking about it right as it was happening.

Recession--The recession was a pretty big thing of course, affecting the whole world thanks to some really stupid banks.

Columbia--By that I mean the space shuttle that exploded. Those guys at NASA are always so careful, when something like this happens people remember it.

Columbine--To date, any school shooting is compared to or refers to Columbine. I think that says a lot about how much it left a mark on everyone.

Spirit and Opportunity--The two Mars rovers, still running even to this day, long after they were expected to go quiet.

O J Simpson--I was very young, so I don't remember very much, except that the OJ Simpson trials were all anyone could talk about at the time.

The Simpsons--They started in 1989 and are still running as the longest-running animated show ever. "Simpsons did it first" after all (Including even a parody of this song.)

Enron--I don't remember very much, except that the Enron Scandal was a thing that happened. I unfortunately forget the details.

Boy Bands--Hoo boy, who around during the time DOESN'T remember bands like N'Sync and the Backstreet boys? They were everywhere...

Wardrobe Malfunction--The little nip slip that happened back in that one Super Bowl. Yeah that caused a minor panic from parents and TV companies, didn't it?

Twilight--Love it or hate it, this thing became bigger than almost anyone expected.

Harry Potter--This was everywhere, and the books and movies sold like hot cakes.

YouTube--Time for some of you to feel old... YouTube is almost 9 years old now. And it's everywhere.

Google--Another way for you to feel old, Google was founded in '98. Yeah... how many of you remember the age before Google?

Facebook--Shockingly enough, Facebook is actually a year older than YouTube. I admit I didn't even realize it until just now, but look at how big it's now become.

Princess Diana--Her death via car accident was picked up and widely talked about for a long time when it happened. I can remember that much.

Abortion/Global Warming/Gay Marriage--Big political topics that got their own periods of "everyone is talking about it". And that's all we should really discuss on the topic for now...

More will likely come as I remember them, but that's what I got now for the moment. What about you guys? Anything you can think of that might show up?

EDIT: Just thought of a few others to toss in...

Hurricane Katrina--One of the most disastrous hurricanes to make landfall in America, to my knowledge people are STILL feeling the effects of it from where it hit.

Superstorm Sandy--Another of the most disastrous "hurricanes" to make landfall, this one going along the entire east coast, NYC included.

Japan Tsunami--The tsunami that hit Japan was quite damaging, and even put a nuclear reactor in jeopardy.

Ukraine--This is probably jumping the gun, but I'm referring to everything happening in Ukraine right now.

I've got quite a few to add. Some may be a little more for the U.S., but they were pretty big events.

Ghadafi
Kony 2012
Sandy Hook Shooting
Flight 370
Royal Wedding
Bitcoin

If I think of more, I'll add them.

Hmm, off the top of my head.

Fall of the USSR.
The genocides in Rwanda.
Nelson Mandela's release from prison and fall of the Apartheid.
German reunification after the end of the Soviet Union.
Yugoslav Civil War.
Human Genome Project.
Good Friday Agreement.
Hubble Space Telecope.
Y2K.
GPS.
The Japan earthquake and nuclear reactor crisis.

There's plenty of things, really. Though, I must admit most of it happened outside of North America. The 90s were quiet here.

Great suggestions here! The only one I can think of that hasn't been mentioned was the fall of the Berlin Wall, which occurred the year after the song was released.

EDIT - I kind of wish that Columbine wouldn't be mentioned though I understand its importance. My four years at that school were a living hell for my friends and me. When we graduated in '95, we never wanted to think about that place ever again.

I think your list is a bit Americentric (American-centric).

It really needs to diversify a bit to encapsulate what has affected the World, not just one nation, unless that was your aim to do so.

It should really involve mention of Iran war & government, Egypt, Korea (north & south), Kim Jong-Il & Kim Jong-un, Greece almost bankrupt, IRA in Ireland, Felix Baumgartner, death of Nelson Mandela, Higgs Boson discovery, Wikileaks, Angela Merkel, Kosovo, African wars...

Just some ideas on diversifying a bit.

Just curious as to why it was a living hell?

OT Very good idea for a thread, so much stuff could go in! I'd probably mention the silly stuff like Janet Jackson and her nipple being a world event...too much serious history would make it a bit of a drag. Now i'm trying to think of them nothing is coming to mind! Damn that pop culture. lol

I may have to do a little research

I know it's a bit America-centric, that's an unfortunate side-effect of me being an American who didn't really pay any attention to news until recently. That and being bad at history and dates/names/events associations. As well as not thinking of everything. A lot of things people have mentioned already are things I actually forgot about now. The Royal Wedding, Kony 2012 (Though I don't remember what that actually WAS), Snowden, the Egypt Rebellion, Nelson Mandela, and others.

Actually, thinking about it the Sheep Cloning could probably be tossed in as well. And maybe the ISS, though I can't quite remember when that became a thing.
