There probably won't be one.

Every country really even capable of starting a World War is way to paranoid to even consider it. That and the fact that they are mostly all kinda bound together by Nato.

Edit: But according to my brother, the Next big "Conflict" from us Americans is going to be over in one of the African countries somewhere. Troops have already gotten deployment orders. Maybe something could escalate there>

That's rather contradictory, because a world war involves the entire worlds and not just two countries.

Are you serious?

I doubt that's ever going to happen. I'm pretty sure the odds of a Chinese invasion is slim to none at best. They simply have too much to lose for very little gain.

Also, it gets hot in China as well.

Maybe if we can get everyone in the world to jump at the same time, we can move the earth off its orbit.

And from there, we fuck with Mars.

But seriously, I'd say it would probably be all the major nations going at it. Who knows.....

I'm not sure why you would be. China has to get through Indonesia first, and if we learn anything about conflict on a global scale from Risk, Australia is most easily defensible point on the map. Anyway even if they did I can't really think of why they'd start with Australia. I'm pretty sure you got nothing to worry about.

There's really no reason for another world war to start, unless one country decides to be a complete dick or something.

One side? An alliance between the world's six most powerful nations, whichever they happen to be at the time. The other side? One word: Batman.

I don't think it's likely we will see a large scale war between two first-world countries in the next 30 or so years.

Maybe when the oil runs out or the world's population increases too much.

Australia vs New Zealand, it will take the assistance of every nation on Earth to defeat their army of android sheep.

That said, I don't think WW3 would ever happen because everyone knows a war of that scale would end in a nuclear holocaust.

As for fighting another alien race, the odds of encountering one at the same technological stage as us are microscopic so any war with aliens would simply be a massacre for whoever is more primitive.

I don't think there will ever be a total war involving great powers fighting against one another. Not as we know it, anyways. Technology is too advanced, countries are too connected, and there are too many nuclear weapons. Perhaps some small scale clashes and proxy wars, but millions of troops and thousands of tanks and aircraft massed against each other? I don't think it will happen.
Let's hope I'm right!

ok but what if a terrorist orgination got there hands on atomic weapons
Then we'd all be after the terrorist organization instead of amongst ourselves. This actually happened sort of, though not for real, but thinking it was real was enough of a reason for Bush to gain enough support to spur the U.S. military into action and no world war came out of it, obviously.

Just to answer your question seriously:

Side A: U.S., U.K., France, South Korea, Japan, Israel, Germany, Taiwan, Italy, Thailand, Australia, Canada

Side B: China, Russia, Brazil, Iran, Pakistan, Indonesia, North Korea, Malaysia, Egypt

I pretty much just arbitrarily decided that, by the way. The only major military I left out would be India and Turkey. Turkey might go with Side A. India probably would just because Pakistan is on Side B.

None of this shit would ever actually happen, though. The only things I could think of that might start a world war would be China attacking Taiwan or vice versa. Oh, and I guess North Korea, if they ever do anything. Outside of that I just don't see anything going on right now that could lead to it.

China and the rest, or the Khalifate and the rest. The latter seems unlikely following the revolutions though.

In reference to the Australian invasion by China:

According to the 2009 Defence White Paper, issued by the Australian Department of Defence, the Navy needs to increase the amount of submarines and maritime vessels to protect Australia's northern approaches (mainly the straits running through the Indonesian archipelago) to protect against a growing Chinese threat.

Why they would attack? that comes down to a couple of things:
Last year China imported 17, 000 tons of Uranium, and Australia hold around 40% of the worlds identified Uranium resources. On top of that China is one of the largest importers of Australian Iron Ore. With the Australian Dollar gaining traction in the world market, prices for both Iron and Uranium are becoming more expensive. China could come to the conclusion that it's easier or cheaper to cut out the middleman.

Yes, Australia being an island is easy to defend against an enemy. It's relatively isolated and hard to reach. But, without a large well-equipped military it becomes one of the least defendable points on the map, due to its large size.

Australia only has around 82, 000 troops (25, 000 Reservists, 57, 000 Active). Many of the active troops are deployed overseas, in the Middle East and South-East Asia. In comparison China has somewhere around 4.5 million troops, with 2.2 million active. So they only have to look at us meanly and we're done for.

This is further increased by the fact that somewhere around 80% of the population live on the East Coast (New South Wales, ACT, Queensland and Victoria). So in turn, large stretches of Northern and Western Australia are uninhabited or have really low populations.

Improbable... Yes.
Impossible... No.
