Who would be remembered?

In one of Moviebob's latest Gameoverthinkers, the topic in question was about what characters in gaming will be remembered and who will be forgotten? Basically he was stating that even though there are many famous and popular video game characters, over time some of them might fad away from existence and might not get the recognition they deserve.

But this lead me thinking about who would be really remembered? Classic videogame characters like Mario, Mega Man, and Link will probably be remembered. And even though Moviebob highly doubts it I believe that Master Chief will be remembered, but what about some of the lesser popular characters like Crash Bandicoot (sp?), Samus, and Banjo & Kazooie who were the most popular characters back in their times? What will happen to them?

Anyway I like to here what everyone else here thinks about this topic. Who do you think will be remembered, who do you want to be remembered, and who do you want to be forgotten? Discuss.

And for anyone who wants to see the video heres the link: http://screwattack.com/videos/TGO-Who-Will-Be-Remembered

Edit: When I mean remembered, I mean like around fifty to a hundred years from now.

I'll always remember Crash Bandicoot. :D

I think Gordon Freeman will be remembered, I want XIII (google the game damnit, then play it) to be remembered, and I want Lt. Foster from MechAssault to be forgotten (luckily he probably has been).

I'm thinking gamers of that era will be so knee-deep in virtual reality gaming they'll have no idea that gaming such as it is today even existed. Or they'll throw a laugh about how primitive we were.

the cast of l4d 2 will be forgotten, most of the WOW NPCs, starfox is rapidly fading into obscurity, Faith from mirrors edge was a good character but i doubt she'll last, The entire cast of Gears they where to generic, all of ODST, everyone from N3 is already, Revan and cast from KOTOR (No not Carth, yes darn it carth will be forgotten), i mean i can keep going but the list just gets to be to long. Its easy to say most characters will be forgotten from this era of gaming because either A.) they are to generic or B.) there are just to many games to remeber all the good characters from.

I think at least either Altair or Ezio, maybe even both, will be remembered because I think as characters, they're rather unique--either by their appearances or personalities. The games are quite unique as well. Not a lot of games allow you to scale massive, tall buildings and jump down on suspecting victims stabbing them with hidden blades in the sort of style AC brings to you.

In 20 years, probably Gordon Freeman, probably Vault-Boy, probably Niko Bellic if that character is ever reused (if not, then he'll be forgotten).

In 40+ years, nobody. I don't think any current gaming fictional character will hold that strongly onto our memories as a group.

Frankly, in 40 years, I'll be surprised if we still have Superman, let alone Cloud Strife and Reaper from UT3.

Fifty to a hundred years? That's a little unlikely. Anyway, the ones to be remembered are going to be those that were in revolutionizing video games. Such games either introduced a new aspect of gaming or hit their peak at just the right time, so that people could relate to them in some way or another. For instance, I could see the characters form Final Fantasy VII still known in 20 years, for realism's sake. On retrospect, the characters were not as impressive as other Final Fantasies, the graphics were no where near as good as other games of the time, and the story wasn't very original either, but it was the first FF to use 3D graphics and had a phenomenal atmosphere. As such, it is more likely that it will be remembered because of its atmosphere (setting, music, and mood just to clarify), and consequently, its characters will follow suit.

Nintendo and Sonic, along with Pac Man will remain universal constants.

Others will come and go, like most FPS protagonists I don't have the courtesy to remember the names of.

Luigi ... not Mario. Mainly because Mario is being bent over and ... asked to pick up his fallen popularity despite the fact that they shattered when they fell. Luigi on the other hand, could become the new-old Mario (he could be new but in a good way like the old Mario was).

Another notable character ... Yoshi. Yoshi is just AWESOME. Also, Link, nobody can kill link.

... speaking of Yoshi and Link, I wouldn't mind seeing a rip-off game which is basically LoZ but with Yoshi instead of your horse and with goombas and koopas instead of bats and gremlin-thingies.

JRPG characters will most likely be forgotten.

Master Chief, Mario, Pikachu [hopefully], and....fiddlesticks! I can't think of any more.

EDIT: Gordon Freeman

I recognized both Harold LLoyd and Felix the Cat.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nameless One and Guybrush Threepwood stood the test of time to some degree as the power and continuity of forum nerd culture shall stand firm until the end of days. But who amongst us will lament the passage of former icons such as Bomb Jack and Miner Willy? Do not the fearless Commander Jameson, the implacable Goggles or the redoubtable Corporal Jonlan deserve a place in the annals of gaming history?

Mario, Link, Gordon Freeman, and maybe Master Chief (love it or hate it, Halo has one of the biggest fanbases there is, as far as I know). Probably some others: Guybrush Threepwood will be remembered, if not on a large scale, and the same goes for the Nameless One.
