Who Would You Let Die In Mass Effect 2?

I tried to get them all to live, but that's just the compulsive Mass Effect nerd in me.

Characters I'd let die if I had to...

Jack, annoyed the crap out of me. Supposed to be deep, but came off as far too unlikable and annoying.

Thane, maybe. Never really got a feel for his character. Struck me as kind of dull, but with so many colorful characters in the game, it's easy to see how one can be overshadowed.

But even then, both had strong points and were interesting in some ways, even if it was only marginally.

Grunt, Thane, or Zaeed

Well, lets be honest here...

Zaeed is old, lived a good life, he came along either to get rich or die.

Thane is going to die. He (at least in the ones I do) has repented basically for everything and is ready to go out. Even if he survives he knows he will die, so he is prepared for it. I think he would prefer to die saving the galaxy rather than in a medical bed waiting for the end.

Grunt is... Well... He's dumb IMO. I understand the Krogan mentality, I understand the (more or less) mutual respect of Krogan in Mass Effect, I personally found Wrex to be one of my favorite characters in Mass Effect 1 (aside from Tali that is) but compared to Wrex, Grunt is just a *bleep*hole bred to kill. He rarely goes deep into his feelings, and is one of the worst drawn-out characters bioware has made in a while... I mean, I think they were just trying to put in a replacement Wrex, and realized that it wouldn't be as badass as Wrex so they tried to make him badass... YOU CAN'T MAKE BADASS!!!


I don't see why a lot of people disliked Jack, she had a lot of backstory, lot of personality, she just chose to try and hide it. And for good reason! Think about it, what if you were in her shoes, having been tortured as a kid, used as an teen/adult, taught that showing any sign of emotional weakness will get your ass handed to you if not worse... That is what Jack went through, and her emotional state shows it as she tries to prevent others from seeing it.

While I would never try and get one of my squad killed intentionally, if it came down to it, I would leave Jack to her fate. I haven't done her romance side-quest because of the fact her attitude ticks me off every single time. I know she gets better, but the first and second impressions didn't help.

That said, when I re-do my playthrough for ME3, I'm going to go with the consequences I got in my first playthrough. Namely, Tali dieing from the rocket when I picked Zaeed to lead the first fire team, and Grunt going down after he led the second.

I couldn't kill Jack. She was my favorite. Miranda died. Everyone else lived. I made a happy face.

Jack. Honestly, she made no attempt for me to even try to care for her.

And in my playthrough, I made sure not to look up any ways to keep them alive. I don't understand you people who go through all the minute little videos and details to basically have your own controlled perfect ending.

That is so stupid to me. That defeats almost half the purpose to the game. You are controlling your won fate and ruining any nasty surprise.

I lost 4 people in mine. Jack, Thane, the annoying Scientist, Robocop.

It gave me a closer connection to the game.

I think I would have liked it if someone HAD to die, like in Mass Effect 1- it was a surprisingly hard decision in the first one of who to let die (at least for me)

The idea that I came up with was that, when The Collectors launch the surprise attack after you get the Reaper IFF- that your next 'mission' involves you bringing your squad with you, but having to leave one person behind for a problem on the Normandy upon departure.
When the Collectors attack, the squad member has to fight to escort Joker through the ship.
Barely succeeding in getting Joker safely through, it comes down to whether that Squad Member is loyal or not.

If they are loyal, they are overwhelmed and taken with the Cerberus crew.
If they are not loyal, they are killed by the Collectors, or a Praetorian (etc)

This then adds either the urgency to rescue your Squad Member alive, with the crew- or to avenge their death with violence.
Additionally, this adds another level of weight to your decisions to other parts of the game, besides the End-Game section. You might pick your best, most loyal squadie to stay behind, out of trust, then frantically rush to get them back from the Collector Base, for their safety- and because you've used them in combat through most of the game, so combat literally FEELS different, harder. No matter the outcome, it also brings the feeling of remorse, knowing how things can really get FUBAR, and helplessness that Shepard's orders, which have gotten everyone so far, suddenly went so wrong and endangered one of the core crew members. Not to mention it builds up more hate and antagonism for the Collectors, or Harbinger, that keeps saying how he will 'hurt you' whenever you fight his avatars.

Not to mention that the squad member COULD be rescued with the rest of the crew- so doesnt interfere with that whole No One Left Behind achievement stuff.

This is one thing that irks me. Everyone says Grunt is dumb, and that Wrex is better. What's better about Wrex? All he does is talk about how his race is doomed. He's an emo, made a promise to his father who he killed for breaking tradition, left his race to rot (initially), and his side quest was so meaningless it was ridiculous. And when he chose to point a gun at you on Virmire, I almost asked myself what the point was of letting this P.O.S. live. I did so because I could convince him, and thankfully he became more upbeat and awesome in the 2nd game.

But the great thing about Grunt is that he's the best comic relief in the game, bar none. More times than not, he had his own unique input on every situation miles above the rest, and he was the only person to make me laugh every time. He's child like, impulsive, violent, and that's what makes him so unique from the rest of the cast. Wrex is just a stereotypical emo that's trying to be a badass, similar to many characters in JRPG'S.

Maybe that's why I kind of dislike ME 1 by comparison to ME 2, because it was trying to be like a JRPG, and not enough of its own game like in Mass Effect 2.

I didn't let anyone die sadly. I think it would make it way better if someone died. If I had to choose...Jacob, Grunt, and Miranda(after I get her biotic power). btw, who else loved mordin and legion? Best chars. P

I'd probably go with Jack, but not for the reason everyone else uses, i.e. "I hate that *****"

I'd let her die because at one point when you talk to her she upfront tells you that after the mission she plans on going on a killing spree to get revenge on Cerberus. This is not something that I feel should be allowed, seeing as she even says she's going to kill people barely related to her getting tortured.

I can kinda imagine the scene in my head:
Jack: "help me up from this cliff Shepard!"
Shepard: "Yea...about that... remember all that stuff you said about murdering people just for being acquaintances of family of Cerberus operatives?"
Jack: "Yea...why? Oh...Shit."
Shepard: "Yea..."
*Jack falls to her death*

Not Mordin!!
I never use him in combat unless I have to for a "Mordin is Awesome" mission.

Mordin is actually quite awesome in combat.

I even have videos ... that's my Insanity Infiltrator built around AoE and CC (I only snipe occasionally).

Only died 3 times that run .. but wasn't specifically going for a zero death run (I skip a fair few risky missions on those).

Not true. Wrex is incredibly cynical, aggressive, and high-strung. Thane on the other hand is very philosophical, composed and almost entirely passive until he is forced to act.

I fail to see any similarity between the two, other than the fact that both of them could kill a man with minimal effort using their bare hands.

When I played I managed to make everyone survive without knowing how.

In my second playthrough I planned to get some people killed but kept it so they'd be random people. I lost Tali, Jack, Grunt, Mordin and Legion. But I played this commander as psychologically damaged anyway.

I don't dislike any of them so I probably wouldn't LET any of them die, depending on how I play my commander of course.
