Right now, I'm in a more than nasty break up. My ex gave me back all the stuff that I've given her over the last year and a half. Now, she wants it back. She's told me that she'll take me to court if I don't hand it over. Now, who legally owns all this junk taking up space in my living room?

Oh, a friend of mine had a situation like this. When you do go to court, they find in favor of whoever has the receipts. So that's who owns it now.

Edit: Sorry, I got that wrong. It's if you don't have receipts, she gets it all.

Well, if that's the case, I guess I'm good to go then!

Sorry, guess the edit wasn't there yet when you quoted that. Anyway, if you have receipts, it's yours. If not, pretty much anything she says is hers, she gets, no matter who bought it, or when it was bought.

My friend lost furniture, and tons of stuff he had for 3 years before he met the girl that broke up with him and then tried to sue him, just because he didn't have any receipts for any of it saved.

I keep the living hell out of receipts. I have it down to the week. If it does go that far, heaven forbid, I'm in good shape.

I lol'd at your intense degree of receipt-keeping.

I'm a poor college boy, keeping receipts is like a fun little game I play to pass the time. I'm turing into my parents more and more each day.

That would suck if I were in a situation like that. I never keep my receipts for anything. I don't want to be chilling 5 years down the road then all of a sudden "I'm sorry the PS3 is whose now?"

Thanks to everybody who responded, you have given me a little comfort, at least for a little while. I'm not the type to post all kinds of emotions on line, but Thanks.

I keep receipts like they were old photos. Now and then I'll crack open the ol' photo box and reminisce about the good times my money and I had together, and then get drunk and cry because I miss my money so damn much.

I'm kind of confused about this. The court automatically agrees with the woman or whoever calls dibs first, with no receipts in play?

It seems pretty arbitrary either way.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Girls say a lot of shit when they're angry. I'm sure she didn't mean any of it. Who ended this relationship, out of my own curiosity? If you ended it I'm sure she only said it because she was heartbroken. If she ended it, then yeah, she's a *****.
