Philip Marlowe.

Sure, I'm a Holmes fan as well, but Holmes lack's Marlowe's attitude.

Of all the detectives I've read so far, Marlowe is the one I find most entertaining.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed Heat Wave by Richard Castle. ;)

Amongst American detectives, I'm going with the OP and saying Columbo. Amongst the rest of the world, by which I mean Britain, there's a lot to choose from. Hercules Poirot, Inspector Frost ("a Touch of Frost", Morse ("Inspector Morse"), Sherlock Holmes, Tommy Murphy ("Murphy's Law")

You guessed it. Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden (conjure by it at your own risk). Seriously, it combines two of my most favourite book-types: fantasy and action-detective stories.

Doesn't matter if it's from a novel,(probably one of your hippie trash sci-fi novels pffft) movie series, ancient classic crime stories.

My obvious choice is I believe compared to Jesus by Yahtzee if I'm not mistaken.

That's right folks,or should I say...... Falks [sub]huurrrr[/sub]:

Columbo!

My favourite thing about him is his general way of playing with people's heads, screwing with the one he suspects until he makes them confess even before he finishes gathering the evidence, showing up and tormenting them, when at first he seems like a poor silly policeman.

Also, how he always shows his badge only AFTER he freaks people out in each episode :D

[HEADING=2]Fun facts[/HEADING]

Columbo's wardrobe was provided by Peter Falk himself; they were his own clothes, including the trenchcoat which made its first appearance in the second episode.Falk would often ad libitum "Columbo-isms" (fumbling through his pockets for a piece of evidence and discovering a grocery list, asking to borrow a pencil, becoming distracted by something irrelevant in the room at a dramatic point in a conversation with a suspect, etcetera), inserting these into his performance as a way to keep his fellow actors off-balance. He felt it helped to make their confused and impatient reactions to Columbo's antics more genuine.

And last but not least, this is the character talking about his job.

Oh ,yes, please add the little things that make him your favorite. All of them are good at their jobs.
Ninjaed me on the first post, damn you!

I love Columbo, he's the man!

The Batman. A close second is Shawn Spenser from Psych.
He is quickly growing on me. I love his sense of humor. Very similar to my own.

Perhaps a little too similar. I'll have to ask my black lawyer friend, Guston Burster, to see if there's any copyright infringement money to be had.

Whenever they scream like little girls, I find the episode is even funnier.

Agreed.

My favorite episode is the next to most recent episode, with Fred from Scooby Doo (Freddie Prinze, Jr.). I loved seeing their fanboy/nerd sides coming out.
