Alyx Vance- the only female game character i've seen who is'nt a cardboard cutout
SUCH. A. LIE.

typical guy-designed generic "girl-next-door" style supposedly her own person but needs a man to do all the hard things and swoons all over them, improbably attracted to the geeky character that's a substitute for the player, serving her only real purpose to increase Loser Appeal.
Congratulations on figuring something out that most gamers never do: Alyx Vance is a one-dimensional character. Her personality is pretty much designed around the ideal geek stereotype for a woman.

I'm going to have to second the recent mentions of Fatima from Anachronox and Imoen (especially in BG2). Both superb characters. Imoen might not be if Bioware didn't have such amazing writers.... but they do. :D

This may be a stretch even for me (cause as a general rule i despise all things sci-fi) but possible KOS-MOS from xenosaga. Dunno why really just really dug that character. I'm missing the obvious though. can't think of it now. I have to admit i like the idea of a female heroine over some muscle bound freak slaughtering all in his path. Shoutout to Celes of ff3 also.

Blaze the Cat from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. 1. She's characterized as kinda withdrawn(shy) and you can actually relate to her(or at least I can). 2. She is one of the only female game characters that won't get any ire from feminist, in other words, she isn't Ivy and she isn't Peach. 3. Cat's are awesome.

Victoria McPherson from still life
Selphie from FF8 (i know i probably lose some credibility in saying that)
and Fiona Taylor from mercenaries just for rocking a real Australian accent.

Alyx Vance annoys me, her sole purpose seems to be to cover up Freemans lack of speech with tonnes of pointless dialogue and her infatuation with Gordon actually kind of creeps me out, especially the way her dad seems to approve of his young daughter hooking up with his co-worker.

I thought Bridget is a guy ?
Favorite as in good looking? It's hard choice, there's too many pixels.
Favorite in depth, probably Aerith.

I second KOS-MOS, just for the badassery. She actually shot through an army guy just because he "was in the best line of fire", good thing he deserved it (that opinion changes at Episode 3). Then again, maybe it's just the AI doing its job.

Mmmmm... Franziska... And the best thing is, what she really needed all along was a hug. Awwww.

She also has the saintly patience required to put up with being followed around by Cream for an entire game and not snap.. And she can kick Sonic's ass.

Speaking of kicking ass...

Being a character in Disgaea automatically means you kick at least 1000 times more ass than the next videogame character. (Really. The level cap is 9999.) But Etna's got the badass attitude and razor sharp tongue to let you know how much you're going to get your ass kicked.

So, I hear the only way to have a favourite female character is based on sexual characteristics now. Oh, wait, that's not actually the case, is it. Don't worry though, those hormones will settle down one day.

I'm going to say Krystal from the starfox series, why? because:
1) she dosent love the main charicter like most.
2) she looks good.
3) no one else said Krystal so I get her a to myself!
4) I like to try be unique as possible(just like every one else) and no one mentiond her yet.
5) cause I'm strange.

Lara Croft - Tomb Raider: Legend, and in none of her other games. Ever.
yes! she actually has a character in that game. she is driven by her mom and then has to deal with betrayal and she seems like shes barely coping towards the end shes supposedly a stereotypucally badass chic, but she relys on her freinds in that game, leaning on them for support both informationally and physcologivcally. i cant wait to find out what happens to her in underworld.

i also want to toss in votes for both samus and alyx vance but those chars have been talked about extenseively so for all the reasons others have posted, i vote for them.
