Why a Cookie?

I thought this would be an interesting topic to discuss about on the Escapist.
For the time I've been here on the escapist I always see people awarding each other on the Escapist with a picture of a cookie whenever they get a question of some sort right.
This got me wondering.
Why does it always have to be a cookie and if it wasn't a cookie what would it be?
If it couldn't be a cookie I would use this.

If I'm remembering correctly, the cookie thing started with a program/virus placed on computers, where the Cookie Monster would pop up and wouldn't disappear unless you typed in "cookie" to feed him. Then, he'd disappear temporarily before popping up later. How this later transferred into a reward for doing good, is unknown to me.

I dont really know where it came from it just kinda popped up everywhere one day and I never questioned it. My favorite thing to say involving cookies has got to be. You did what? where?! for how many cookies!?!?

Why is that wrong? It's just an idea that someone had, and it started getting popular. Now it's: "Don't question the cookie". I always thought that on a gaming site, you'd be rewarded with the cake, that is in fact, not a lie.
