Well im not sure how write this, the english isnt my native languaje but anyway.

Some time ago i saw a thread asking about temrs for fictional technology or enviroments where a story can develop, and they mentioned steampunk, dieselpunk, cyberpunk... whats next spacepunk? ropepunk? why use the term punk for something that simply separates a fictional enviroment based on art and/or technollogy of a timeline.

The term punk being applied simply has to do with the original: cyber punk, the term punk being applied here refers to the protagonist being an anti-hero. From cyber punk came new genres such as steam punk, I don't know why punk is still used as it is no longer entirely accurate.

From what I understand, putting punk at the end of something signifies it as a dystopian version of it. It's kind of like saying "What if this genre collapsed on itself?" While that's more anarchist than punk, punk goes better at the end of steam than archist.

Steamarchist, dieselarchist, cyberarchist. Nah, just not the same ring.

Your English is fine for a non-native speaker (although I'd call you an idiot if it were otherwise).
I believe those term are similar to an early adapter, think of a steampunk as someone who realized steam power was a good idea earlier than most others, however I could be entirely wrong that's just the way I see it.

Originally, the "punk" part, had to do with the story, but now, it's mostly used to refer to different technology styles.

Also, I love the idea of "ropepunk". I mean, think about it, an entire civilization technology, based entirely around ropes. How awesome would that be?

Steampunk is a subgenre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used?usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England?but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date.

The possiblities of rope are endless.

That being said I'm betting my share for 'post-modern'-philosiphy-punk.

Remeber, all you have to do is throw in pointless jargon, and invert all of your statements.

Meaningless postmodernism eh? You might find this amusing then: http://www.elsewhere.org/pomo/
If you don't see the funniness, refresh and read again. A new one every time!

As for ropepunk, I'm not sure how it would work, but it would surely be awesome. And that steampunk guitar is beautiful.
