Fuck is actually Fornication Under Command of the King, so technically it has always been a bad thing, because surely being ordered to have sex for your country is hardly pleasant in the first place?

Because they FUCKING are, ok?

People really overreact when it comes to swear words... I don't mind them, but don't use them too often.. OT, Swear words are bad because people are afraid of real freedom of speech.

I don't think they're too bad. Just that people over use them. It's nice to have a conversation where the other person doesn't cuss three or four times every sentence.

They're watching, you know it.

I don't care about swearing, in fact, I'll use it in any other sentence, I'm not afraid to say what I want. If my parents swear at me, I'll swear back, an eye for an eye. Same with anyone. I'll follow the rules, but I'm not a zombie to the system, I have my own way of doing things, and if it happens to be socially unacceptable, well, have fun trying to tie me down, society.

WARNING: scary true facts about swear words ahead

Most so-called "curse" words have very old roots. "****" comes from the Latin "cunnus" meaning simply "vagina". It's not a swear word in Latin. "Fuck" is an acronym that dates from the Middle Ages - "Fornication Under Consent (of the) King". You would actually hang a sign on your door with F.U.C.K. on it if you were having sex and the king approved. "******" comes from the Dutch "neger" which just means "black" - as in the colour black, no more, no less. So as you can see, none of them are actually even all that offensive when you look at what the words actually mean. Why people continue to be offended by them at all perplexes me no end.

i don't really consider them BAD, just impolite and very tacky.

Its really silly to run around and say fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck; it does not establish the quality of your character and people will not feel you are an interesting exciting individual to be around.

If they do, it is probably to a low quality of their character.

Context, old bean. If someone tells you to fuck off, I'm fairly certain you won't just skip along.

Cursing overmuch makes you come off as someone who is dumb; and by that I mean stupid. Or badass, but only if you have met the other badass certifications.

You're right that most cuss words are just synonyms, but it's the rudest one out there. So some people get offended when it's used at them, because you could've have used a more polite word.

Meh. People tell me to fuck off all the time, I barely notice. :D

Cursing overmuch is a bit lame yes, but then saying ANYTHING overmuch is just as stupid (something those "cake is a lie" people sure as hell need to learn).

Lol freedom of speech has almost nadda to do with swearing so much as with content.

Swear words are just tacky and make one sound uneducated. I have a lot more respect for someone who can get a point accross without resorting to a "baser" language.

No that etymology has been proven false. No one knows fuck's origin although believed to be from German words.

The only people I know who have problems with profanity are prudes. people find it offensive because they're told it's offensive.

It depends on the people who hear it being used. It is not a big deal for some, but for others it is. That's because they associate too much bad things with such words. I really wonder why. As for me, I cuss because it's somewhat a relief for me to do so when I am angry or pissed off.
