That's Nintendo for you. Well, it's Nintendo when they are on top. They did the same thing with Wii games only recently bringing down the prices of games that are years old like Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy.

I think it's because the game cartridges used with the DS are harder and more expensive to manufacture compare to the disks used in non-handheld consoles.
There isn't much difference between new and used games for the DS either as there aren't online passes or promotional codes so if you don't like the price that much buy a used game.
Game prices have also risen recently. A brand new, just released game for most consoles is about £35 - £40 so £30 for a game one or two years old (and still really popular) isn't that bad.

I guess it's pretty simple after all. Still unfair though. Oh well, I don't really play the DS any more. But part of the reason I don't is because they are so bloody expensive.

Games for Nintendo consoles are split into 3 price levels.
Those are (using Mid-European prices on DS games):
- Indie (5 to 10 ?)
- Low Budget (10 to 30 ?)
- Triple-A (30 to 40 ?)
Those *do* resemble the quality most of the time, sadly, and that has burnt into a large chunk of their customers. That means, if they lower the price, they place it in a bracket people simply believe isn't worth it. In return they lose customers AND profit.
Safe to say, the nintendo videogame market is broken.

Mostly because of Nintendo. They priced the cartridges in a pre-downloadable gaming scenario, and haven't adjusted to the new reality...
Also, Nintendo believes that lowering prices diminishes the perceived quality of the product, so they keep the prices up to get the impression their games are on an entirely different level than anything found in the apple/android/XBLA/PSN store.
