Why are people so ashamed to play Runescape and other games?

I play Runescape on occasion. Not ashamed to say it at all.

I can see why some people rag on it though. The community is bad, even for your usual MMO, the graphics pale in comparison to its rivals and there is quite a bit of grinding involved.

That said, I still enjoy it. The quests are fun and well thought out, and there's a large variety of things to do.

I'm more ashamed for the fact I payed money for it. And spent hours of my life on it.
I WOULD STAY UP ALL NIGHT CUTTING TREES

Fixed that for ya.

The quests may be fun and well thought out, but you have to do a crap load of grinding to be able to do them. I used to play, but when you realise that you spend more than half of your time grinding, it's just not worth it.

Touché.

When I was younger(around twelveish) I would have no problem grinding for a couple of hours, then go off and play something else. At the higher levels it gets extremely tedious, I eventually went off it. Came back a few months back on a whim, did a bit of everything then went cold turkey again.

I'll probably abandon it completely when LOTRO goes Free. :)

FREE?!?!?! I payed over 100 bucks over the years with memberships.
for 100 bucks you could buy some half decent games with graphics not made of paper mache.
I haven't played it myself, but I heard it got a complete graphic overhaul a few years ago.

Well, I didn't know about Runescape HD. I originally avoided it because of the graphics, but now I don't have an excuse. I'll try any fantasy RPG once.

Thanks for replying to a post clearly marked as being posted on the 5th January 2009 - that was posted over a year ago...

I don't agree with some of the things I posted on this thread now, but is it so hard just to check the date they were posted before quoting?

I haven't really got anything against people who play runescape. But, I do have something against people who play runescape... and do nothing else!

Truely we live in a high definition age :Rolls Eyes:
Hey, it's better than it was "before." Though I rarely stick with any MMO for longer than a week.

i played runescape once.. by that i mean on and off for a month before i realized what good mmorpg were.

and let me tell you.. it was boring as crap.its basically "the Sims fantasy island expansion" all you do is cut tress, mine and run ...combat is weak sauce , community wise it was horrid and the graphics didn't pull me into the game at all.
every one plays it at some point in their gaming life but the 90% who know a waste of time log off after a short amount of time. to my knowledge only 4 people ever stuck to it for over a month and one of them is you OP.

oh and on the subject of teasing people who play these games. i never do because every one tryed it sometime and only a few like it its their choice. and i play pokemon once every blue moon to be honest. its a different kind of game but doesn't mean i dont like that.

Because they imply that you don't recieve social fulfilment in the real world. Out of all the people I know who play MMORPG, that definetly holds true. It's also an unadmirable trait; spending your time doing something wholly unconstructive, at a desk, on a computer monitor. Devoting a lot of time, energy and effort to a useless cause. The output could be produced instanty by a computer, and is worthless to humanity. An equivalent might be if a man were to spend most of his time building small, useless brick towers. It wouldn't win anybodies respect, and would suggest he's got nothing meaningful to do with his time.

Other genre's aren't as shameful as the don't require the same dedication, don't impact on social life, and don't really provide an alternative to social fulfillment. So they don't imply you are a 'loser'.

p.s Sorry for the slight repetition in paragraph 1, I can't be bothered editing it.

I laugh at people who play it past the age of about 12.
The age limit is 13+.
I think a slightly edited quote from an earlier post should suffice:

Next time someone calls you a noob or anything for playing a game you enjoy, use the words of Pierre Elliot Trudeau after Nixon called him an asshole :

"I've been called worse things by better people."

Seriously, stop giving a shit what ppl say about you and just enjoy yourself. Life is too short bro.
