Everytime someone creates a VS thread almost everyone who replies say something like "ohno, not another vs thread".

Personally, i have nothing against them but everyone else seem to have.

Why? What's wrong with versus threads? Do they usually result in flamewar or is it something else?

Well yeah there's the flamewar thing, but also, how the hell do you discuss something like that? If I said to you "Apples vs Oranges", all you can really say to that is which you prefer and why. There's no potential for further discussion except just stating the same things over and over.

They are good at starting flame wars, and they don't really have too much discussion value.

They generally don't provoke very much discussion-- just a bunch of people posting their choice and occasionally giving their reasoning.

They usually result to flame wars.

I really don't mind them, but they do tend to generate hate and aggression.

I wouldn't say anything about the flamewars, no one really cares about them. I would say I fdon't like them ebcasue they are shit boring and more often than not there will be one common opinion for the same reasons. They don't give anyone anything interesting to say.

Lets say I say.
Laharl can kill Master chief in one second and you say NU-UH without even knowing who laharl is.

You could discuss why you prefer one option over the other and try to convince the other of agreeing with you. Ofcourse, then you would have a more "complicated" question than something that just is a matter of personal preference. Like Anarchy VS Fascism or something...
Also, doesn't the same thing apply to any poll? There isn't really much else you can do in a poll besides state which option you voted for and explain why.

Because there are thousands of them.

They are all stupid.

No matter how clever you think your VS thread is, it is still stupid.
Something with such a high shot rate should at least manage a few intelligent offerings, yet VS threads never do. They are the rule proving exception.

You know what I find interesting: if VS are so looked down upon, why are so many official question-of-the-days VS threads.

I mean really, how many times has vampires v zombies v robots been done?

Id go with that, you can rarely see a Vs thread which doesn't within ten posts start to have a arguement. Not a debate where the games pros and cons are put into question, that would be good, no a little spat between members where insults and pacifers are thrown at each other.

Their is also the fact that normally if a debate starts, if someone disagrees they will just type about how shit you are, and how shit the game is and give no actual reasons beyond "X is shit, your shit, people who play X are shit". Which of course invites a reaction, because you play the game and you've just been called shit because you do.

One day, we will have two reasoned people debating games and we shall all look on them with awe. Untill then, I will continue to look into the Politics section of the forum where you can see some good debating action. Not the religious part, that kinda sucks massively.

Because it all comes down to personal preference and asking a gamer to be objective about his favorite character/game etc. is a mission impossible. It always ends in a fanboy flame spectacle.

Fair point, but vs threads usually pit two things against each other which just results in a clash of opinions. A classic one is Halo vs CoD which simply never ends well.

Read the forum guidelines; they say why the mods don't really like Vs. threads. It's mostly about lack of discussion value, although there is a real danger of flamewars when the Vs. subjects are sensitive. It's also about not promoting lazy posting practices; Vs. threads seem to get more than their fair share of one line posts, picture posts without comments, flame posts, spam posts, etc.

This thread doesn't have a lot of content either. A thread really needs substantial discussion value to warrant it's existance, otherwise the forums get clogged with stupid threads asking people to state their preference for one random thing over another.

Read the forum guidelines. They are your friend.

Flamewars, discussion value, easy to make. In all fainess I made an indirect VS thread with Ocarina of Time vs Majora's Mask, and it didn't get locked. Why? Because people found something to discuss nevertheless. That's one thing I love about the escapist; You don't just get an answer, usually you get an elaboration as well. Therein lies the discussion value.

How do you measure if a thread has substantial discussion value and why don't you think this thread has it?

They are looked down upon here simply due to the fact that it incites inflammatory twattery.

I have to admit I kinda chuckled when I saw this.

OT: VS threads are bound to get people to start fighting.
