Why are we all so meta?

There's a habit on these forums to talk about these forums. If we're not talking about how lovely a place this is we're deliberating on whether we're a bit exclusive, or we're chatting on how we all got here (answer=70% Yahtzee).
Is this normal? Should we see a shrink? Why am I doing it too?

Because we rock!

I don't know. Maybe we're all friens here and like talking about that stuff.

Hmmm...

The fact that you made a thread about talk about threads on threads is....... disturbing

That aside, metacognetics is a good thing. It helps you learn. I don't think seeing a shrink would help, as most shrinks operate by making you question your routines...kind of like talking about forums on forums. But why not talk about talking about forums on forums? And on that train of thought, we have this thread.

Because this is the post-modern age. Self-referencing is what we do. Just out of curiosity, Philosophy is thinking about thinking, would that qualify as meta too?

It's not unreasonable to sit in a room and comment on the paint or the curtains? I talk about my surroundings because I'm a critical person, I criticize.

That being said, I kinda like the drapes around here. Matches the carpet beautifully.

This thread is probably the most meta thing I've seen in quite a while. Excluding this, which is one level higher; being a post about a thread about threads about threads.

And that last sentence, being a sentence about a post about a thread about threads about threads.

And that one, being a comment about a sentence about...

(Infinite meta-ness! Yes! (Oh, my there's another spot. (and here's something about the parentheses this set is nested in. (and here's another. (quintuple nested parentheses!)))))

I would have to say that we're all so meta because most of us feel we found a forum that doesn't require us to stoop to a level of quality that most of us detest. Aside from the heavy Yahtzee influence, I hardly ever spot a flavour of the week meme here, which I find to be rather refreshing.

Constantly re-examining how the forums function and why we are here serves a few functions:

1.) It helps clarify to new members how things work and what is expected of forum members.
2.) It helps members reconfirm or revise forum values and expectations in the face of member turnover and a shifting membership base.
3.) It helps members decide whether the forum continues to be worth their time and energy.

I haven't noticed it, although I just came from a forum that's stagnant. Every topic is of the 'good old days' and everyone just continues to trade nekkid photos of the other members that they've collected over the countless drinking sessions and RL BBQ's/ gaybar numbers contests.

I don't think it's really a bad thing, everything else is discussed, why not the forums? Apart from anything else it helps keep the quality high.

Because we like to think what we do shall be remembered, that and in jokes are better than normal ones. Only because of the ease in the telling.
