I wanna know why their are no anime based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft or Anne Rice
these seem to me as obvious good sources for stories, and I'm not talking about tentacle porn or and other kind of hentai

and yes I am aware of Demonbane

I can only speak for Lovecraft in saying: No. Lovecraft's tales are so great because they're told in first person with Lovecraft's writing style. Anime form wouldn't do his stories justice, especially considering the fact that the scariest thing about his tales is the fact that most of the horrors are unimaginable.

I see what you mean, but I still think it could work if done right.

Anything could work 'if done right.' The problem is that many things aren't, and won't, be done right.

Another thing would be that there are only middle-aged scholars as protagonists for the most part who eventually die after becoming batshit insane. Would any of these qualities mentioned above hold any appeal to the japanese market, let alone those who don't understand Lovecraftian Horror.

Because "power of friendship" in Lovecraft is generally trumped by: Cthulhu Mindfuck (that is to say insanity, not literal intercourse). Also, anime generally has it's roots in the power of humanity and Lovecraft has it's roots in: humans are but fleeting insects in a universe we fail to understand. Imagine Lovecraft as general relativity and anime as quantum physics. People will try to combine them but they just don't fit right

to me anime is kinda a untapable source....you can't really turn things into one. the only one that kinda did it is halo legends, but they where short stories DRAWN in the style of an anime.

I'm gonna agree on that one.

As everyone else said, first person is what made it better. An anime would make that go to shit.

Nice opinion. Especially coming from the guy with a 50% naruto avatar.

I'm assuming we're not including that one parody anime starring Nyarlethotep?

There's other anime that clearly draw influence (like Soul Eater), but that's the only one I know of that uses a (satirized) character directly.

Maybe because the IP owners of Lovecrafts work have too much integrity to see it fucked up by shitty animation. "OH NOES! CTHULHU IS ATTACKING! Gather a bunch of 12 year olds with fucking neon coloured hair to summon the Megazord Ultimate Fighting Mech and use the power of love to defeat him!"
No. Fucking. Thanks.
So it clearly wouldn't be a shounen anime.

Seinen might work, though. Something along the lines of Berserk or Uzumaki...

How many animes do you think exist solely becaus of Lovecraft? He's a culturally pervasive influence, despite him being dead for 70+ years. You can't just take "the dunwich horror" for example and just copy and paste it into an anime, it won't work. For one, most anime creators speak japanese, so in the first place they either have to a) read translated works, and anyone into anime should know that english doesn't translate well into japanese at the best of times or b) they speak english as well and have to struggle through it once again for the same reasons. Just take a look at some animes, mostly the ones with horror themes and sich, I'm sure you'll find a plethora of subtle Lovecraft references. And I mean, come on, can you imagine Lovecraft with a japanese style of aesthetics? THAT would be the unimaginable horror.
