Its been a while since school anyway

but yeah I thourght of this while snacking at work

I mean why are schools so anal about you eating/drinking during class?

Is it because its a distraction? a privelige likley to be abused? going to cause a mess? I can sort of understnad the anti gum thing, becuase it ends up underneith the desks, but even then if they didnt have to hide it...

I find gum helps me concentrate at work if Im bored

also the thing is my hunger levels would almost never sync up with when I was allowed to eat

early in the morning my stomach WILL NOT accept anything..somtimes not even water, but when 9/10 rolls around Im starving..but I coulndt eat in class

somtimes at lunch I wasnt even hungry...but usually I was, I went through a stage where I would just eat everythign during recess, and wasnt bothered by lunch

plus it was even worse when I was at boarding school...you cant controll how much food you get (well actually you can if you go buy some..but who can be bothered?), just the same two little biscuts..which isnt much fun when your STARVING come recess time

anywya I guess where Im going with this is, snacking/drinking responsibly makes you happyer and more productive...so why not?

Because it makes noise, distracts you and others and might make a mess in the class room.

Also synching your food-rythm with your work-rythm is a useful training, since not every job allows you to eat at will.

Simple answer? Because other people ruin it for everyone. Like most things, the rule exists because a few people ruin it for everyone. If not for them, there's probably not much real reason you couldn't.

Well, you have to remember that this isn't the case everywhere. When I went to Upper Secondary, snacking was allowed during class (although I think this varies on school-to-school basis). I usually ate my breafast in my first class of the day, because like you, I really can't eat anything early in the morning.

I live in Finland by the way, as a geographical reference.

My teachers have no problem with me eating in class so long as I'm not distracting.
Well, except for in the chemistry lab, and perhaps in the biology lab, but those are justified, no?

The problem is, if one kid does it, why can't the rest of them? It's a slippery slope and the rules are there for a reason.
Controlling a class of 30 kids is a pretty tricky task. The difference between school and work is that you want to be there, because you want to get paid. You know that, a lot of kids don't see why they should be at school and don't give a crap.
Teachers being anal about the rules is so that everything doesn't turn to shit and the kids actually learn something.

I know and usually yeah I can deal with not being able to eat when I want

but really, a snack bar or an apple itsnt going to screw up the entire class (plus Id getless distracted because Im not thinking of food)

It's noisy and messy, not only it distracts you from your work.

I don't mean to sound like a prick but just "man-up", you are not going to waste away within 6 hours and if you have no medial complications there is no way in which it can be justifiable.

I remember being allowed to drink water during the summer months. Other stuff wasn't allowed, as most of it would have been unhealthy, and far less effective at combating dehydration.

Once I got past 9th grade, age 16, and moved on to the next level, we could eat pretty much whenever we wanted to.

I figure it's not such a bad idea to restrict in-class eating/drinking for the younger kids, as it would get abused to hell and back.

However, once kids start developing an understanding of the phrase "Freedom, with responsibilities", I feel it's a good idea to let them eat light non-crap snacks, as it helps concentration.

Hell, I always brought a banana or an apple whenever I started the day off with chemistry or mathematics. It just really gave me that boost I needed when doing the brainy stuff in the mornings.

Well there is also Health Issues, Many Kids today have allergies to just about everything and on random levels of Severity as well. The second you take out some Peanuts, grapes or some kinda of chip is the second someone with a allergy will freak out (Either because is psychological or an serious issue)

There is the Distraction Issue - If you take something out, some will either do the same and you have alot of noise, or someone will complain because they don't have something to eat and then drama happens.

There is a cleanliness Issue - Some teacher will tear up any work with stains of food on it. I know that if a "Scan-tron" (Those sheets you bubble in for test) if they have stains on them they can provide false answers and haft to be voided.

I was able to snack at my school. Hell, my AP English teacher in 12th grade even let us cook breakfast in class. Bacon, eggs, french toast, toast, etc... Damn that was an awesome day.

Because children tend to make large messes. Every single time one of my classes had a party, there would be trash everywhere. Second reason would be that its a distraction. Its kinda hard to stay focused on the lesson when all I can hear is the guy next to me chewing as loudly as possible.
