Why can't people remake bad things?

I put this in gaming discussion even though it applies to everything.

Why do we always need to remake things? I know it's obviously an easy profit tool, but the unimaginative approach of remaking good things is just a stagnation. I caught myself playing my great vice, Black Hawk Down (PS2) today (a game that absorbed more of my time in its heyday online than WoW has for most of my friends), and while I saw the shitty graphics and broken online system, the gameplay was still as pristine as ever. Wouldn't it make more sense artistically to remake something that deserves a remake?

Something like that would actually mean a concept could get a second chance, because I've played a lot of games that were solid in some regards (think Darkest of Days or The Witcher before the enhanced edition) but just had problems that bogged me and a lot of other people down. I'm not saying we should all rush stock to THQ to see them remake the Finding Nemo game, but couldn't we try and push a good concept into a great product with a little extra effort?

Also, as a footnote, I know a lot of people are going to say "well obviously people remake stuff that's good because it's profitable and has a proven market etc"

Save your time.

You've demonstrated that you already know the answer to your own question, and that you don't want to hear that answer again. Why kind of begs the question - why ask it?

An answer to the question. Theres no money in it and the peaple that would remake the bed tend to have problems with ownership rights or don't have the skills.

Perhaps the subject line was misleading. What I wanted to ask is: wouldn't it be better to give something that had a solid core and a mushy exterior a second chance?

They need to make a next gen Shadowrun RPG. Not that fps garbage. The old Shadowrun games on the snes and genesis weren't bad games though. On the contrary they were awesome. So I guess my wish doesn't apply. :(
Fuck yes they were. The genesis one is probably the most faithful PnP to videogame translation ever.

Also, fuck yes they do.

It's a good way of pretending to be creative while not having to spend too much effort.
I'd like to see Mirrors Edge remade well. Or a sequel. It's all good.
Are you high?
No, but in all seriousness...remake mirror's edge? I've got things in my refrigerator older than that game....although that might say something about me too...but still

Like you said, game designers want monies, and its a risk of money and credibility of they're name to remake something that wasn't popular before. They're going to get laughed at, and somebody's going to say "that cant be any better than lsat time" and not buy it.

This thread is about bad games being remade. I liked mirrors edge up to a point, but it was a missed opportunity. If a sequel doesn't happen, I'd at least like to see the first one given another chance. A bit of tweaking and it could have been GOTY.

And yes, I am high, but I don't think that has much to do with it.
Alright, alright, I see what you're getting at here, and i have to say that I agree...i was just a bit shocked 'cause a mirror's edge 2 has been rumored for quite some time now. Personally I thought Mirror's Edge was top-notch.

Yep, it's all about the money. Why would they remake something that didn't sell well the first time (even if it is their fault)?

Well if you remake something that was bad, it's kinda embarrassing when you get it even worse.

I know, a remake of Wet would be awesome.

Actually make it a fun game would be the sign of a truly inspired developer.
