Why can't we be friends?

I've been a Nintendo fan most all my life, and one of the biggest debates I've participated in about videogames is the console wars. Sony vs. Nintendo has been a big deal, with the two fighting back and forth over gamers. But it doesn't have to be this way. Just as Microsoft and Sony split the market 7 years ago, who's to say Sony and Nintendo can't share the spotlight for the 8th generation? Sony's standard controller and the Wii U gamepad together, all games published on both systems - wouldn't that be great? To quit bitching about graphics and just get back to making the games we love?

EDIT: Suddenly my thread turned into console vs. PC, which is basically the opposite of what I intended, but we might as well run with it. In addition to the above questions, a new topic: why can't the PC gamers and console gamers play together? Why can't we have cross-platform games that actualy play cross-platform? Why can't I play Black Ops 2 on PS3 with my buddy on PC? And why is there such a feud between consoles and PCs?

The biggest conflict I've seen regarding console fans is PC users vs everyone else. I see a lot of PC users attack consoles, assuming they're redundant compared to the 'mana from heaven' that is PCs, and therefore a lot of console users don't take PC gamers seriously for this matter.

Let's be perfectly honest here, would gaming be as big of a thing if it only stuck to PC's? the thing with consoles is they require less dedication/less money, and they can still play the same thing, even if it didn't have some of the PC's advantages, it's basically the same product, thus that lead to it's popularity.

As soon as people realise that PC gaming is the superior platformer, all will be right with the world.

Have you played Bioshock Infinite on a decent PC?

You can see the brush strokes on the paintings!

I've never understood the whole PC versus consoles fights. I love games on both, and if the game comes out for both consoles or PC, then I have to decide which to buy it on. If ti's a game I'd want to mod or needs fine motor skills (shooting, etc), them I'll get PC. If it's an RPG or something that needs less buttons and such, or is platmformer-y, then I'll get it for the console. ... I have my PC hooked up to my TV, so I sit on my recliner for everything, anyway.

We've been through this (not you and I specifically, I mean the gaming community in general), the money and/or knowhow to build a great gaming PC will ensure that consoles are always more palatable to the masses.

In addition I for one am in no hurry to see a return to the "Upgrade Four Times a Year to keep up with new games constantly pushing the graphical envelope". I bought a new gaming computer 2 years ago and thanks to Consoles keeping graphics on a fairly even keel I was able to run Bioshock: Infinite on my PC just fine, in fact I've been able to run every major release I've purchased on PC this year just fine. Last time I bought a new computer, which was back in 2005, the damn thing felt out of date in a year...

So I am grateful for Console Gaming because it keeps the crazy folks at Crytek and such in check.

To be fair, 2005 was when the Xbox 360 smashed onto the market, with the Wii and PS3 following it in 2006, so developers had a fair bit more horsepower to work with compared to 2004, or 2010-Present Day, where even mid-range PCs (and some low-end ones) dwarf the raw power of the consoles.

OT:
I don't know why. It's always seemed a bit silly to me, the whole console wars thing. I didn't even know what a SNES was back when I was growing up with the Sega Genesis, so I couldn't care less about Mario or Zelda or anything like that, as long as I got to keep playing my Sonic the Hedgehog. Considering the waning number of exclusives to sell the Xbox or Playstation, it feels weird to see people viciously attacking one console for playing a first-person shooter better than the other, or trying to defend the internet service as being 'better' because you have to pay for it on one system.
