Why can't we make a good matrix game?

I was watching The Matrix just earlier this evening and it got me thinking why have all the games based off it sucked?

Imagine if we combined the wide sprawling city of GTA 4 (and driving) with the parkour of Assasin's Creed, the leaping and gliding of Prototype, the bullet time of Max Payne and the free flow combat of Arkham Assylum. That would be a fantastic game. Add in huge amounts of character customization (like Mass Effect, Saint's Row 2) and bonus content like guns, abilities, costumes and cars for your operator to unlock.

The nature of the matrix could be used to explain all the normal videogame quirks, much like the animus in Assasin's creed, between in game missions you'd walk around the ship, talk to the crew and do training sims. You'd want to make Agent's impossibly strong and fast as they were in the film, so when you've got one your tail its an incredibly frightening and harrowing experience.

It doesn't have to be set during the films, the resistance was fighting for decades, possibly centuries, eliminating the Uber powerful Neo and canonical events. You could be a fresh new recruit, plucked from the matrix, possibly serving with Morpheus' crew before getting your own ship.

So what are your thoughts

Most of that sounds like Prototype to me.

It is bizarre isn't it? Out of all movies it is the most obvious one that could be somewhat easily made into a decent game and yet they keep failing it.

I completely agree with what you said. The game should work in a similar way to GTA in that you get normal 'missions' (certain locations within/out of The Matrix) but can also freely roam the city, with Agents and cops reacting to you in a similar way to the GTA games (in that you do something "wrong" then you get noticed, the more you do, the worse it gets, eventually with Agents after you).

The weapons could be almost limitless, the combat could be too if they took the time, and the customisation would be easy as well, if they took the time.

Enter The Matrix was awesome!
It was for the time, but considering what could be accomplished nowadays, a Matrix game could be absolutely amazing by today's standards.

What about slow-motion leaping out of a speeding sports cars, dual pistols blazing, in a ridiculously awesome leather coat and sunglasses?

I recently bought the trilogy on Blu-ray. I love the films, if it came out, I would buy a good Matrix game straight away.

Enter the Matrix WAS ok. the driving parts needed some improvement, but the combat, story, setting were cool. Graphic adequate, music good.

And the time of Matrix is over... i don't think there will be any more games... ah well, maybe one or so.

They really just need to go back to Path of Neo, take out everything that didn't work and polish the remaining 50% to a mirror shine.

Whatever else people say about PoN, that game had serious potential. When levels were good, they were GOOD. On Xbox, anyway. PS2 version looked like complete crap.

If the game wasnt during the time period of the movies it could be cool. We could be the guy who they thought it was THE ONE and die in the end while doing something epic that makes him connect with Neo in some way just to have an ending with a meaning

Because only Atari's attempted? I've commented on this here several times. Eventually someone good will come along and do it just as LucasArts did for years for the Star Wars license back when their driving force was quality games. I just hope the product is multi-engine.

Max Payne! Although his clothes weren't exactly Matrix-esque.

I mean they made what, one Matrix game? All the hype about that trilogy died years ago, there's not enough money to be made to warrant a game being made now.

I think that part of the problem is that "bullet time" has been completely played out. When The Matrix was first released, bullet time was relatively new, though it wasn't totally original, and The Matrix used it to better effect than anyone else. Unfortunately, in the video games industry, things move from "innovation" to "cliche" at warp speed.

Fair point. I guess what I'm saying is that while adding nothing really original to gaming, a matrix game could combine many of these great features into a sort of perfect harmony. Awesome driving, free flow melee, parkour and environmental actions as well as intense firefights. Nothing new but if seamlessly connected would be fantastic.

The lull in hypes good, its give whoever is publishing a chance to go back to what made the original so good without having to try and cash in with the later movies.

not really... if it was mostly prototype, the parkour would be WAY too over the top.

Now THAT would be epic. the other matrix games sucked major balls.

A good Matrix game is entirely possible, but the problem is that it hasn't really gotten into the hands of a competent developer. Bad games are just bad games, Matrix or otherwise. However, publishers often count on the franchise popularity to fill in for the quality....
