Why can't we use a keyboard/mouse on consoles?

I've been wondering for a while why more game developers aren't letting us use a mouse/keyboard combination in games? I mean, it would give people the option to have either a controller, or the mouse/keyboard.

If I could use my PS3 as a computer, and still be able to play games the way I like to, I wouldn't even bother owning a PC anymore..

Because then no one would buy the companies controllers, and that's less money for them.

Unless of course they rub 2 brains cells together and make a "Mouse and keyboard adapter" for the console.

One reasons perhaps.

My question is always why anyone bothers using a console in the first place. Its just a retarded computer.

Of course, "build a system so simple that even a fool can use, and only a fool will use it."

Because using a computer is rocket science?

Because if consoles are designed to be played their way why should keyboard and mouse be compatible with them? And why the hell would anyone wanna use that for games on consoles anyway?

I don't know that its trolling, per se. Most of the major releases have been polyplatform over the past several years. In many cases, the computer versions perform better. And since you can plug console or console style controllers into a computer, even the actual input differences evaporate.

Uh, Dreamcast had a keyboard and mouse.

Oh, wait, I'm one of the like 10 people on this site that actually bought a Dreamcast.

I prefer PC gaming, consoles are handy in the fact I can play them on my plasma, and I 'know' that every game I buy for that console will work. No fucking around with drivers, or worrying about updating my PC every few months because better and better hardware becomes available.

I know you can use a mouse/keyboard for PS3, but from what I'm told it doesn't work very well in games (if at all) since it still follows the controller axis?

It's just a personal choice, but if I could swap between a controller and mouse/kboard for different games (i.e controller for fighting games, racing, role playing, and keyboard/mouse for fps), I'd be stoked.

Obviously it wouldn't work for everyone, some people just like chilling on the couch with their controller, and I like it too, but it would be cool to be able to swap back and forth.

Sort of. Look at the specs of a 360, try building a machine like it with off the shelf parts. It wouldn't perform even close to how a 360 performs. The hardware is designed with only a few tasks in mind. Which is why it can do more with less so to speak. Which is also why the PS2 lasted 8 years. Try keeping a computer around 8 years.

Perhaps because you can play games on an Xbox for Aus$300, or you can play the same games on a computer for Aus$2000+, assuming you want to play at the same quality.

And the usual excuse of "any idiot can build there own PC for half that price" is bullshit. If everyone in the world who needed a computer could build it themselves, computer suppliers would be bankrupt. The fact of the matter is, it's a whole lot simpler to buy a console.

This is coming from someone who owns 2 consoles, and a gaming PC. And FYI, I prefer the PC.

Also, I think I just got trolled. :p

OT: I suppose the general attitude is that If you want to use a mouse/keyboard combo, you have to shell out for a computer.

Yeah, I'd probably get a console if I could use Keyboard + Mouse for FPS games. I'm constantly having issues with my PC.

Microsoft actaully have a policy on this - something about keeping entertainment separate to work or something stupid - It's basically to protect windows and PCs, so that the Xbox doesn't become a cheap -all in one.

Sony have a keyboard tho correct?

Exactly, my PC is about two years old, and while it still plays new games, Dragon Age, MW2, after long gaming session it starts to chug quite a bit. I don't think it has much life left in it and I don't relish the thought/cost of building a new one.

You can. I tried a mouse and keyboard a long way back on the PS2. The game was red faction. There is some type of aiming help for the controller that didn't work well with the mouse. It made the mouse as imprecise as a controller! Controllers are fine for moving, running and jumping, but suck for precise aiming. If some company would make their fps support mouse and keyboard, I could quit gaming on my pc!
