Now think about this, They probably had to pay sony and all the other blu ray founders Millions of dollars to get the rights to put blu ray in their consoles. All of this money it would cost to buy all these blu ray drives as apposed to just dvd drives, to just install games on the console and not play it off blu ray discs?

At this point you can get a new blu ray player for 40-50 bucks. Why waste all this money, you could literally stuff a few dvds in the same box to install it on the xbox instead of having to have spent all this extra money?

What are they thinking?

The file size of next gen games is probably going to be massive so they probably don't want to spend the production cost of making every single game and game case handle several dvd discs.

Also they are billing the machine as an all-in-one player and blu-ray is the popular choce for movies so, they kind of needed to cash in on that.

Plus I find this extremely funny that even if microsoft sells more console than sony, it is still money in sony's pocket, so it's pretty much a win-win situation for sony.

Because blu-ray is the hip thing to have far more for movies then all the rest and we all know Xbox is all about being hip with the kids now.

It's probably ok for two discs, but handling 4+ discs can be a hassle if you don't have enough HD space to do a one-time-and-forget install. And given how game sizes have increased over the past generation, I wouldn't be surprised to see some 70gb games a few years from now.

Tangent: How are they going to handle HD space if xbox one games HAVE to be installed? Unless they're putting 2TB drives into the new consoles they're going to run out of space really fast...

So if both consoles cost the same, why NOT pick the one that has the blue-ray player and save yourself 50 bucks? Unless there's some MUST HAVE exclusives for the other one or something.

Also there is TV/desk space to consider. Having to manage more pieces = clunky.

I would rather not handle 4+ discs either so I think a blu ray player is the better option. I remember having 10+ floppies for Quest for Glory 2 and easily that many CDs for Police Quest SWAT and I hated switching all those disks. I can easily see some games having whole stacks of discs if they went the DVD route and that would definitely suck.
