Well. Nobody told me that this was the first boss who you could block the attacks of. When I realized that it made fighting him a lot easier.
I blocked the Taurus demon's pretty handily. It seems ridiculous him having the club bigger than me and myself being a wimpy Pyromancer.
Really? Huh. I think I had kind of decided by that point that you couldnt block boss attacks. I also only had a pyromancer who rocked the shield and spear. I thought about how small the Capra demon was and tried blocking his attack on a whim, omg it hurt but I survived it and was able to get past him to the staircase where I could funnel the dogs.Maybe if I had put more points into blocking...
Still, dodge button dont need no points invested in it!
If it wasn't possible to block boss attacks, characters wearing heavy armor would be completely boned in this game. There wouldn't even be a point this way.
You are probably right about your shield being the problem. You should check its physical reduction stat, and if it isn't 100, it probably isn't worth using in most cases, unless it has special properties, or a different reduction stat is particularly high, and you want to use it against certain types of enemies.
You should also look at the stability of your shield: the higher the better, because as far as I can tell, the higher your stability, the less stamina you lose when blocking. You can imagine how important that is against heavy hitters like the Taurus and Capra demons
You can improve your shield stability by upgrading them with shards, but there's no real point in ascending them upon any special paths, like lightning and such.
EDIT: Since both blocking and rolling both cost stamina, by buying endurance points, you are kind of investing points in both of them. The important thing when deciding if to dodge or block is the quality of your shield and your weight class.
If you are light, you can roll a lot, and take advantage of your mobility. If you are medium, roll when convenient, but you'll probably rely more on your shield. And if your are heavy, only roll in the utmost emergency, as your fat ass wasn't made to be rolling around.
A light character could possibly ditch carrying a shield altogether, but this is a very challenging play style, and I wouldn't recommend it for someone new.
That is the reason heavy characters need A LOT of stamina and a big shield with loads of stabilty. They need to take just about every hit on their shield, and if their stamina runs out, they have a serious problem.
