Why did some people not enjoy MGS4?

It seems really bad now I reread it but this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.67412?page=1] sums up my feelings on the game.

Everyone who I know who has played MGS 4 hated it because it wasn't stealthy enough, it was too easy and the plot was poorly done.

I'm just biased, I liked the original more than any of the others.

MSG4 was just too long-winded for me and its a wind you don't want to stand down... eh wind of.

MGS4 is just too epic for the stupids to enjoy. I loved it to death (though it is overrated in some aspects). Hopefully Kojima has ended the series and there won't be any more sequels to milk it with as everything has already been resolved.

I dont know why everyone hates the story, it was brilliant, yh it was unrealistic, but that is the point of a Video Game, u can use ur imagination to create a game, but if there was one thing that made me scratch my head, it was the Gekkos cow noises and they had some sort of blood on the inside of the machine. The game was near perfect and if u know the story and ur playing the game through for the second time and dont wanna watch the cutscenes, then skip them. U can also play the game in many different ways like run out and kill everyone, sneak through or sneak and kill someone every now and again. Sorry about me going on and on lol, but I just love the game.

The first MGS was amazing. The series deteriated from there. MGS2 was great, stopping terrorists blowing up an oil rig. Then you got knocked out half way through, and it turned stupid. You have a boss fight with Doc-Oct from spiderman and you having a frequency sword at city hall...

I wanted pulse pounding stealth-action gameplay like syphon filter, not a sci fi story of 'vampires' and "SHOW ME YOUR RAGE" bullshit.

It keeps getting worse.

I really liked the game, but it was not near as good as the prequels, it had way too many cutscenes(which means less gameplay) and some of them could have been perfectly omited(SP?), near the end near in shadow moses(it was on shadow moses right?) I thought "wow It'll be just like mgs1¡¡¡but with better graphics"**and came* but it had stupid gekkos and those weird balls with 3 hands) which was a major letdown

I think one of the reasons aside from the obvious cut scenes (which I actually quite liked xD) is that for many people it played too much like a pc game. Linear, very story based, quite like Half Life 2 really, where i think many console gamers like titles more akin to Resistance 2 and Halo where you blow sh...stuff up. (Basically The latter appeals to casual gamers, who usually frequent consoles over PC and the former being less casual gamers.)

I for one don't really like those games. I bought Far Cry 2 and was extremely disapointed because I never really felt for the characters, or found a compelling reason to play for more than an hour at a time.

I agree about Shadow Moses, I wanted to fight and sneak past guards like MGS1, not fight metal balls and the Gekkos, I should have made that point on my last comment, but thanks for pointing it out.

I liked Metal Gear Solid 4. I played it for 17 hours over two days. People always complain about how long winded and annoying the cutscenes are, and for most games I would skip most of the cutscenes. Playing through Metal Gear Solid 4 however, I never once felt compelled to skip any of the cutscenes. I watched more cutscenes than I played the game, but I don't care because they were REALLY good cutscenes. So everyone who complains about it being boring is entitled to their opinion, but completely, totally wrong.

The first time I played it I was somewhat disappointed, since it seemed to turn from a knife-in-the-dark sneaking game to your typical balls out third person shooter. Now I'm trying to play it through without killing anyone, and it's utterly brilliant.

It's all down to how you want to play.

It wasn't stealthy enough? Probably because they ran through the levels with a gun.

Also if they think it's too easy: there are more difficulty settings.

Excatly it all depends on how you play the game.

MGS4 requires two things...

1: You have played the prequels.

2: The ability of the player to comprehend complex ideas and piece the story together.

Most players do not possess both of these things and, therefore, do not enjoy the game.

I liked the gameplay, but I didn't appreciate the structure. 10 minutes of playing, 20 minutes of cutscenes, 10 of playing, 20 of cutscenes...

Metal gear has about 6-10 hours of gameplay (unless your speedrunning), that's the length of an average shooter so I don't know why people are complaining about the games length, the higher difficulty settings are very challenging and in general charging and killing everything won't help, especially since that prevents from unlocking the really good achievements at the end of the game. as for the plot, I played mgs4 and understood it, and then bought the first three and played through them. The game also has a great online mode for those who like more tactical shooters. simply put it's a great game

It really depends on how you play it. If you play like a run and gun shooter then it is about 10 hours of gameplay, but if you play it like a traditional MGS stealth game then it will take you a lot longer.

I found the game good but sadly it diminished from great to good when playing through. The first two acts were superb with a decent amount of stealth and helping the militia forces against the PMCs. However, the third to fifth acts seemed to have hardly any gameplay and were where the majority of the cutscenes were to be found, resulting in the second half of the game being more cutscene than game. Perhaps if they had keep the balance in the first two acts throughout it would have felt a bit more satisfying. I have no problem with lengthy cutscenes (massive Final Fantasy fan) and some of them were superb but they need enough gameply inbetween the plot aspects.
The plot was generally good, though some aspects were weak, such as the background/characterisation of the B&Bs being Drebin spouting a couple of lines about them after they were defeated.
