It's a worse game because it's basically the same game as UT2004 but with far less content. UT2004 isn't even that ugly these days, so you're left with a game that has far less players and far less content. Is it a surprise that people would rather play the previous versions?

I'm gonna say crappy AI.
Errr... who plays Unreal Tournament for its AI? This isn't Call of Duty or Killzone.

It was laggy, no one played it and it was dominated by 40 year old guys who live in their basements playing videogames all day.

It was like they tried to re-make UT'99 with updated graphics, then console-ized it. And the weapons were less balanced. And the level design was worse. And the good gametypes were removed. And the server browser was just AWFUL. Don't even get me started on the AI.
Thankfully UT3 is very mod friendly, so I expect there's a bunch of decent mods out there. I'll probably check them out sometime.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I never hated unreal 3 but it definatly didnt grab me like 2004 did, game modes werent as fun, it didnt play as well (on my old setup I got weird mouse and weapon lag) and just felt... like it wanted to be all hard and gritty like gears but still have the feel of unreal which doesnt really work

It didn't suck, it just wasn't quite as good as 2k4. I'll still play it every now and then (with bots though, cause almost no one is online anymore, and those who are, are too good.)

Because they made the people look like they belonged in Gears Of War.

unreal tournament is class, one of my all time favourites.

the visuals are crisp, vibrant and the game doesn't take itself seriously - it's fun(ny). kill someone with the minigun and watch the 'dance' animation, or the pelvic thrust taunt, or the headless limp corpse animation... the list goes on.

i bought and played ut2004 for about 2 years through admiration and respect for epic games and ut classic.

ut2003/2004 don't compare to the original.

i've played the demo of ut3 and it feels the same as 2003/2004. they're still really good games, but after a while the mountain of crap; visual clutter and dark settings and the slow/clumsy gameplay get too annoying to play seriously.

I have a question.
Do you not know the meaning of "appeal", or did you contradict yourself on purpose?
the unreal series appeals to the pc fanbase more than the console fanbase. epic focused on the console experience this time around, which is funny because the console brethren does not give a damn about the series at all. because of the console focus the pc doods got all butthurt and starting crying. the result is no one likes the game.

The thing that annoyed me the most about it was that they increased the damage of all the weapons making everyone die faster, this means that their is alot less skill in multiplayer games and a much higher proportion of luck.

vehicle vs no vehicle and you lose no matter how skilled you are and how much they suck.
full health and armour can still be blown away in 1 shot

The entire game now has some elements of instagib, which was a fun mod, but did mean that you just need abit of luck to kill someone even if they're a million times better than you.

UT 2004, the only other UT game I ever played, was better than UT3. This isn't because I played 2004 first, but because UT3 went for a somewhat more realistic feel, and that doesn't 'fit' with the rest of the series.
I've played all the UT games, not just UT3. And gears of war is brown and grey colour scheme. Plus, i'm more talking about the gameplay rather than the graphics.

The way I see it the series took for the worst when they hemmed in the Eightball, for those not in the know, the Eightball is the nickname for the Rocket launcher, you could load up Six rockets and target the enemy... for UT2003 they made it only 3 rockets.

Now for the Un-intiated 6 is more then 3, therefore 6 is better then 3.*
If you fail to grasp this concept PM me for more details on 6 being more than 3.

Also the excessive amount of detail slows game motion down, any gamer worth there salt playing UT or Unreal always played on Software mode, it ran faster. More detail slows the game down.

Edit; Also the silly story, with capture the "Field Latice Generator" (FLAG) gametype taking tongue firmly out of cheek. Unreal has story, UT has frags, its the law of the land since the begining of time, mixing the two fucks things up.

i played the demo for about 10 min and then i thought to my self " so how is this different from 2004/ 2003" after a few reviews and a few rounds at a mates house i found my answer. this game tried to be like 2003/ 2004/ and Gears and failed miserably at all 3 endeavors. It was easily the biggest disappointment of this decade for me

Ah, I thought you were saying that UT3 itself appeals more to PC players than the rest of the Unreal series, then went on to say why PC players didn't like it.

Anyways, I agree with what you're saying. To add to it, no gamer who's dedicated to one game likes change very much. UT3 was a little more like the first UT, and UT2k4 players didn't like that too much.

-The campaign is a bunch of skirmishes with very dumb AI that cause you to loose even if you play perfectly yourself. The 8vs4 warfare match comes to mind.
-The campaign story varies from 5th grade story telling to pure retardation in the end(Hey epic, might want to explain why Loque appears of of nowhere despite being dead and somehow finding a badly injured Jester instead of naming it an ending cutscene and calling it a day)
-Worse characterization, especially regarding the necris(compare the 2004 Kragoth and Thannis with their new versions)
-Graphics that make everything look like plastic.
-Poor balance.
-Lack of game modes.

It's Unreal Engine 3. It's the direction they've taken the engine. Everyone could see this coming back when they debuted Unreal Engine 2. Unreal Engine 4 is only going to add even more realism. I look for Unreal Engine 4 to have 100% PhysX support. You have two choices: deal with it, or play a different game. Epic Games has stated on multiple occasions that they are not going to backtrack and take the Unreal Tournament franchise to how it was in 1999 with the original release of Unreal Tournament. They want the Unreal Tournament franchise to feel more like a sport than a game.

Warfare isn't like Onslaught. It has elements of Assault with the conquest based gameplay of Onslaught combined. At first I was missing Assault until I found out that certain nodes in Warfare triggered certain events. Not to mention, if you don't like Warfare, there is a port of Onslaught from UT2004 for UT3.

My only gripe about UT3 is the lack of maps, but that doesn't bother me much since I'm a level designer, and the things you can do with your maps is endless.

That's my rant. I like it better than the original UT, I like it better than UT2003 and UT2004, and I Can't wait to see what Epic does with Unreal Engine 4.
