I started because of stress. I was having severe relationship problems at the time and to calm my nerves a friend gave me a cig. This was many years ago and now I wish I never started... It's a nasty habbit that's harder to quit than people are making it out to be.
Because I stopped smoking weed lol, I needed to pass a drug test to get in the Army, so I picked up smoking to give me something to take my mind off of weed. It worked by the way, haha.
When I was 15 I started smoking because I fell into that "Everyone else is doing it" mentality. I smoked for about 6 months, then one day while I was half-way through a smoke I said to myself "Why the fuck am I doing this?" and quit. Felt like crap for the next few days due to withdrawal..
Didn't touch another for about 4 months when I had a really bad day. A friend handed me a cigarette and I lit it up, took a couple drags and realized that it wasn't what I needed. Haven't touched one since.
Never smoked a ciggarette, cause they'll kill you, what with all the carcinogens, as for pot. I smoked that because my friend asked if i wanted to, it was peer pressured at first, but he never FORCED me to, i tried it, and have smoked pretty much monthly ever since just because it's reaaaaalllllly fun. (and a lot, i mean A LOT safer than ciggarettes, plus it helps with anxiety)
All I know is that if I breathe too much smoke (ie. more then ten breaths or so in a smoky environment), my lungs begin to fill with mucous. If I breathe much more smoke, I die.
I find cigarettes to have a smell that makes me sick, not with cigars though. Cigars have something about them that I find appealing, it might be the fact that they are hand made in Cuba and all natural (my dad smokes Cubans).
Post graduation road trip to Seattle to visit some friends, it was about 3:00am and we were driving through Oregon, I needed something to keep myself awake so I reached over and grabbed my buddies pack of Camel Wides.
I still smoke on occasion, mainly at social events or once or twice a week during my lunch breaks but I never really got addicted. I'll go weeks on end without a cigar or cigarette and then buy a pack, split it with my friends and go about my business when it's gone.
On a more personal note, I have to admit I really hate the anti-smoker propaganda that goes on these days. I'm not saying you should start smoking or anything but treating smokers like they're the villainous scum of the earth isn't really the kind of social behavior we should be promoting.
Around my 18th. When I was nervous for something, I never showed. But it gave me hellish pains in my belly afterwards sometimes, just lighting one up, took the pain away.
For some reason, it always calmed me in periods of stress, though I'm not very consistent in my smoking ways, it just depends on the time, location and funds.
