Why do DotA players rage so hard?

I'm currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Games Design and Interactive Entertainment at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) and one of my units is "Computer Games Studies". Naturally our practical sessions give us a chance at playing games we don't own so we can get a broader general knowledge of games without having to go on a spending spree. Instead we mostly play CS:S, WoW and DotA.

In my practical classes of about 30-40 people, the noisiest, rantiest and most foul mouthed are the DotA players. Seriously they outclass even the ragiest of CS:S players I've come across in all my gaming experience. I've never played DotA though so I have no idea why. Could someone fill me in as to why this game seems to induce temporary Tourette's Syndrome in players?

Today, I was sitting at a computer next to a girl playing DotA, minding my own business with some TF2, when she starts crying. I looked over and on her screen was a little message from someone saying something along the lines of "OMFG YOU REALLY SUCK! SERIOUSLY, UR SHIT JUST STOP PLAYING NOW KTHXBYE".

I know that gamerage is a normal part of online multiplayer games as I have suffered from it on more than one occasion but what the hell is in DotA that drives people to this? Someone fill me in please?

You ever go to an internet cafe with a few of your friends and get totally owned by the group of Koreans sitting next to you? Suffice to say, we have some new friends to play online XD

Sheesh who the hell says Kthxbye sounds just as bad as a hand flip. Might as well start wearing a pink tutu with that. Anyway i think strategic games bring out the worst in well everyone cause usually they last so long when you finally manage to kill the other player you've basically gone mental.

I play DotA regularly with some mates. I'm not great at it. It is a really easy game to pick up and play, but skill really divides players. When you play online, it is not uncommon to see games identified as 'noob' or 'pro' games. If you join a pro game, it is expected you play as a team, can deny, know good item builds. I'm not saying really good players join pro games. Quite the opposite. Players much worse than me join the game, and get abused by team mates, especially if they are 'feeding' the other team.

One problem could be there is no 'middle ground' that I've found. You're either pro or noob, and not alot of people want to identify themselves as noob.

A few friends of mine like to play DOTA. I tried it too a few times, but It's not really my game, and I was doing all the wrong things that Don't taze me Bro said above me. These friends of mine are really nice guys, but in that game.. It's almost like they're different people. I think it's some sort off subliminal message. A good subject for further study I'd say!

Edit: it is a game, but it's just not my game, sorry for that confusing type..

DotA is is a Warcraft III mod. It's full name is Defense of the Ancients. The game involves you as a hero trying to tip the balance in your favor against another group. A computerplayer conintuously spawns soldiers to help you while you must go on a standalone (with friends) against a similar enemy group.

I think the only reason why people rage over it is because the game itself isn't easy, it takes hours upon hours of training to get good at it, and even then you can easily be beaten by other players.

Maybe it's because you die so often?

I'd guess that it's mainly because the main way someone improves their character in the game is by killing other players, not by doing things like capturing ground or killing NPCs. A newbie in many team games might not be much of an asset, but at least they aren't of negative value by feeding the enemy. Hence the jerkish behavior.

Well said. Combine that with the fact that there is hardly a chance of a "true" comeback victory, and you'd get jerks all over. No matter how skilled you are, if your team mates don't cooperate, your team will never win.

You've gotta be kidding me. That's not the person saying it's fault, it's the person taking it too seriously. And it's inevitable until someone mentions "LOLGIRLS" but I really don't wanna be the one to do it. So I'll just say "people should not care what someone on the internet said about them."

Anyway, DotA is the most unfulfilling, boring game ever.
There's better versions of it that people don't play because DotA came first.
There's more interesting gameplay in other War3 customs, but people don't play them because they play DotA.

Also, most serious DotA players don't realize that they're only playing DotA because they're bad at War3 melee and can only manage to control 1-2 units instead of an army and a base.

Anyway, the game comes down to knowing the item/upgrade trees, knowing optimal development paths for various heroes, hero combos (stuns/nukes specifically), and powerup control on the map.

It's not that difficult, but people manage to play it horribly, and it's very easy to lose to a player who's not "as skilled" as you (as one might say) because you're playing -AR and you got a mediocre hero and he got an easy one to use (like Clinkz, say, if it's anything like it was 2 years ago).

Honestly, I was never AWESOEMEEE at the game, mainly because I learned the actual war3 tech tree, and a custom map shouldn't require me to learn 80+ new spells/abilities/items to do well unless it's a persistent RPG, which, yes, the War3 engine can do if you write down save/continue codes (like NES style). Most DotA players don't even try to play those kinds of games anyway, though. :(

Anyway, I do see a lot of DotA players rage, but the people I played with were pretty chill and liked to joke around a lot. A lot of the joking around was imitating morons, which ended up like "OMG R U BOTTING" "DUDE, JOOK IS A BOT" "I NO HE AUTOSHOT FRMO OOFF SCREEN" ...So I could imagine they said something that someone made the mistake of taking seriously and probably hurting their feelings.

I think CS:S is a hundred times worse though, and WoW arena can be very bad, worse than raids sometimes, which is saying something...

Asshats exist in all walks of life, you are surprised by their presense in I-Land, why?
Of course asshats (whatever the hell they really are) exist in all walks of life, I was just surprised at the size of the ass on DotA players hats in comparison to the notoriously asshatt-y CS players.

Ah I didn't know that, now it's starting to make sense.

DotA attracts dipshits and retards, because it's actualy much easier to master than standard WC3. It requires no near-impossible APM, no flawless multi-layer timing, no micro management, no macro management, you just have to know the newest exploits.
Yes, yes, yes, exactly what I said in the nicest way possible explained in reality.

You can have like 12 APM, and only be able to manage one Hero, let alone 3 and an army and a base and an economy, and the only micro required is "press stun, click here" and "STWATEGY" is effectively "creep when you can and kill them and shit, buy the right items"

I forgot to mention this in the OP but it was a LAN match, not an internet game. Not only was the person who was rageing at her in the room but they had been doing it for a while, she was playing for about an hour before she snapped.

In the beginning all Warcraft 3 custom maps served as a way of relaxing after a hard and exhausting ladder matches. You just picked a game that sounded fun whether it was "Battle Tanks" or "Battle of Helm's Deep" asked "what do I do here?", started playing and everyone had a good fun (except tower defenses, those were damn stressful)
QFT. When WC3 first came out I played a whole lot of regular games, usually not 1v1 because WC3 didn't appeal to my competitive nature that much but definitely tons of 2v2's and 3v3's. After a couple team games I would be so wound up I would turn to the custom games section to relax the nerves. After a tower defense or one of those custom games where nothing had a cost I'd be relaxed and ready to go. Then all of my beloved custom game modes began to be overrun by a phenomenon called DotA so I decided to give it a try...and was bored silly. Even when it first came out DotA was filled with people who spent half the time telling you how stupid you were and it just wasn't worth the abuse so I quit and started playing C&C: Generals (because by that time regular games had begun to bore me to tears).

DotA sucks, the people who play it suck, and your time would be better spent playing Tetris than DotA.

Oh, thought it was an Internet game.

Well, then that kid's a fucking dick and you should hit him. In all seriousness, I do wonder why people have the strong desire to insult other players instead of constructive criticism...That's kinda terrible, and if the kid is in the room, he could at least be sitting with his team...Meh. And that's pretty terrible.

Also, DotA shouldn't last an hour per match. ;P

Either way, there will be inconsiderate assholes anywhere you go...Might as well start growing the thick skin now, eh?
