Why Do Gamers Insist On Getting Games On Midnight?

I mean, I've gotten Skyrim and Duke Nukem Forever at midnight, and the next day, I didn't have the energy to play it. Maybe it's just me. If it fits with your sleep schedule it's not an issue, and if my Steam/Skype friends list is anything to go by a damn lot of gamers are nocturnal.

It's because Midnight is so comfortable. Just to be able to relax on it as I get my game is really nice. I mean, what else would I be on to get a game? A simple mattress? A camel? No, gotta be on midnight the whole way man.

That is, unless you meant AT midnight. Then I would say that it is because it is a fun thing to do with friends, get out in the nighttime and get some gamage. Plus some night owls (like me) do fine with staying up late like that so it's not as much of a big deal. Plus it is easier to fit into a schedule if you have busy daytime schedules.

Seriously though . No idea , same reason people take the day off to Play a video game as if the game would disappear if they when to work . It think it makes you cool in the gamer circle or something like that . I haven't figured out normal people yet , not to mentione gamers.

For me, it's easier going out late at night, than getting up in the morning and getting ready to head out for the day. I like my slow mornings! But for ME3 it won't matter, seeing as I will be picking it up after my classes tomorrow.

I'm currently unemployed, so my sleep schedule is more like "Go to bed between 3 and 6 AM and wake up around noon." Ergo, midnight releases are wonderful, since it lets me play the game that day.

Actually the only reason I intend to do it is because I have a night class for my college tomorrow and would like to play the game into the morning, sleep, then play some more.

1. GameStops around here don't open until 10:30 at the earliest. I currently have no car. I would not be able to get the game until about 2PM, leaving me about 2 hours to actually play it tomorrow.

2. Some people are nightowls. I myself am a nightowl. I go to sleep when I'm finally tired, not before.

3. Yes, you usually do get something for a triple A title midnight release. When I went for Skyrim there were a few prize drawings of numbered wristbands at my local GameStop to win a free copy of the Skyrim Strategy Guide, a prepaid 12 month subscription to GamerInformer, and I believe one person won a 12 month XBL Gold card.

4. I'm going with some friends, one of which has a spare TV and he and I will be playing the game with the TVs side-by-side. Just like we did in Skyrim. My Mage and his Archer.

Night time is the only time where I can get some peace of mind and time to myself, why not use it to game?

During day time I do not go half an hour without something happening requiring me to leave my laptop, a killer for immersion.

Well TBH it's not only games that people do this for, people do it for books and DVD's too. I remember working midnight openings for the last few Harry Potter books and the Lord of the Rings extended cut DVD's too. I've never figured it out my self but then i guess that it's a fan thing. You know like people spend months counting down the time and then when it comes it's a case of a 'must haz it nowez' kinda mentality *shrugs* people eh, they don't half do some weird shit sometimes.

For me, it was more of a comraderie thing. Sounds weird, but it's true. I went to some midnight releases because I knew that other people who cared about video games as much as I did would be there. Sure, it would probably be cold, and I'd probably be extremely tired that night, but it was worth it, in my opinion.

This, too. Some places even hold little tournament events or game previews. For example, I participated in a Halo 3 tournament at the Halo Reach launch, a Mortal Kombat tournament at a combined Portal 2/Mortal Kombat release (I got Portal 2), and a Battlefield 3 campaign preview at the Battlefield 3 release.

I was usually up late those nights anyway due to other activities, so I thought, "Might as well."

Depends on the store, your work schedule, and other related things

Some of the local gamestops do give aways and provide pizza for pre-order customers, during the Cataclysm give away I was able to win a double sided store promotion poster.

For some people it's also a social event.

Heck, they had a costume contest for "Arkham Asylum" and the store manager dressed up like The Penguin.

For me I work nights, late nights, so getting a game at midnight and playing it until I'm too tired is not that big of a deal to me. I typically don't work in the morning, so for me, it's perfect and even if I did, oh well.

My co-workers know me well enough to know what I was doing late at night if I come in dragging my feet.

No idea. I've never done that. It helps that I have a crap PC and only just got a PS3. Before that, I only had an original Xbox, so only used games there, really. I think the closest I've ever bought a game, retail, that is, to launch is Battlefield 3, which I got a few months later. I didn't actually buy it though, got it from a friend who didn't want it really, and bought an online code thing. Still counts, I say. In fact, I only have about 3 non-used games. Resistance 3, Killzone 3, and James Bond Bloodstone. The first 2 came with the PS Move I got, and Bloodstone was out for a while when I got it.

Allow me to modify a quote from Cave Johnson to explain:

"Gaming isn't about "why?", It's about "why not?" WHY stay up late and go get a game at midnight? WHY NOT marry your bed if you're so in love with it!"

Really though, that's pretty much all there is to it: "why not"? Is it so strange that in a medium such as gaming that has arguably some of the most passionate fan-bases of any medium out there that some of it's fans don't want to wait until the morning and can stay up to get an hour or two of gaming in? Or say screw it and just stay up all night playing? Even without midnight releases, a gamer staying up until 4 or 5 in the morning playing something really isn't that uncommon at all. So long as you handle your responsibilities and and make it work then there's no problem.

That said, I DO intend to call in sick to work tomorrow. :3
