Most of the athletic people at my school are pretty kind. I've never had an issue with them...

While I don't have a problem with jock bullies at my school, I agree that jocks seem to get better treatment then most at school.
I am going into year 12 and in order to make it slightly easier, I did two yr 12 subjects in yr 11.
I worked very hard on these subjects so it would be justified, and was told that we only had to do five yr 12 subjects overall, so naturally I thought that I would get to do 4 (because I wanted an extra) in yr 12.
Handing in my subject choice form I was told that no, I still had to do 5 subjects, even though I had already done two. So in total I would have to do seven subjects. I complained to the head of academics and explained my case, even going to say I was willing to do uni maths as my 5th (because it would have actually helped later in life).
She told me that the only people who have an exception to the 5-subject rule are people with out of school duties, for example: A sports scholar who had to play his games during the week. I of course thought it was bullshit that a sports exception, which has nothing to do with academics, is allowed an exception; however me with and academic reason was not.
This is of course just one example, there are many others

Well I've never heard of anything like that happening and I'm certain that you are unfortunately an extreme case but yes, some people can just get away with shit.

Just remember they're sad fucks. They're the ones who can't win a fight on their own as they resort to ganging up on you. They're the ones who are so insecure they will bully you for as retarded things as being different and not as wealthy. They're the ones who need protection from being expelled.

Just to say I don't think this is limited to "jocks". Fortunately I've never seen anyone at my old schools be the victim of physical bullying, in fact I've always considered cases such as your own to be myths because I can't possibly conceive of any reason anyone would want to frequently beat the crap out of somebody, I mean what possible motive could there be? From what you've said OP it sounds like you could get half the school staff fired for gross negligence.

this sounds like some bullshit from an american teen drama. i thought all that jock shit was made up?

anyway we dont have these problems in britain. also american football players are pussys, who plays a toned down version of rugby with fucking armour. id love to see one of these "jocks" last a day in a glaswegian high school
Also this. Except maybe we do have this problem in Britain? I dunno. I think the main thing that would stop it though is that we don't really have the "jock" culture as no secondary school I could think of gives a shit about sport, except private schools but then I went to private school and there's nothing remotely like that there either.

Hell, I'm no stranger to injustice in the school system. Although that's mostly as far back as elementary school. Retaliating is honestly the best thing to do, which is sort of sad.

Point is, authorities are pretty much useless.

Thats it, I'm running for PM of Great Britian. If I get in power I will use every scrap of influence on America to get them to end bullying. By that I would actually allow taser guns to be autherised, beatings to be handed out by the child services etc. I think that would work well. I'm not actually joking, give me power and I'll abuse it for the good of others. Hell, I'd do it myself on trips to schools. I'd barely even visit my own country.

Wow, what a story.

I'm going to say what many people are saying. They aren't going to punish the athletes.

I don't know, maybe other places have worse kids than than others, but I know nothing like this ever happened in my schools. The most jocks would do is make fun of people with names and jokes, but that was it. Anytime it got physical, is if the person being called names, blew up and retaliated with force. Though it was usually both fought and got in some kind of trouble. I think my schools found a way to punish the jocks but still allowed them to play.

I was sometimes joked about, but that was it.

Now here is the reason why they went loco on you with the rope situation, and I can understand why:

Now you had balls thrown at you, and of course that hurt, but it wasn't lethal. When you used the rope and "garroted" him(as you said), which means you put it around his neck, that could be lethal. I would have reacted the same way the teacher did. If you had made just the right moves you could have killed the guy; now, you probably don't know such moves, but the teacher couldn't be sure.

That is the thing, since they were protecting the athletes, they are going to see what they did to you as non-lethal. Yes you get bruises and scrapes, but it isn't going to kill you.

I see this in many cases of bullying and this is why the one being bullied gets more punishment in situations like this. The one being bullied, when they do react because the adults aren't seeing the bullying as that bad, reacts with an action that supersedes the severity of what had been done to him or her.

Rope to neck = lethal, it isn't hard to see that. I guarantee that if you had done something like punch the guy in the arm or chest, or pushed him down, your punishment would have been far less if not non-existent.

Jocks just aren't going to get punished like everybody else, they would have to put somebody unconscious in the hospital before anything is done. It is not always possible, but in your type of situation these days, the person being bullied has to learn to be tough and take it. I saw what happened around me when the bullied fought back, and learned that what I faced from being bullied, was a lot worse than the shame, stigma, and time lost from being punish for retaliating.

Probably because if they don't want to lose. If they actually got off their asses and tried to prevent bullying and all that their star players would end up suspended the majority of the time and jocks hate to lose. Thats just my guess anyway.

it was private school
catholic school
Found your problem. Catholic and private schools are for kids with either rich parents, parents who somehow think that they are better or kids who were expelled from public schools.

So ya the douchebag levels are quite high in those schools.
Its probably just luck on my part that I've been to both of those types of schools once in my life and emerged unscarred (especially since the Catholic school was an all boys school in Dublin)

Why do jocks get away with it? Because the culture of any pre-college schooling is physically based, I think. The strongest rise to the top of the social ladder, and intellect is often looked down upon.

Fortunately, Penny Arcade has a word of comfort:

Because some people who play American football are all assholes.
Fixed that for you.

Not all people that play the game are assholes. One of my best friends played the game for two years in school and loves the sport. He has never been an asshole. He is an obsessed gamer like I am, plays every genre of game like I do.

When commenting, leave out generalizations.

Holy shit. I thought bully crap like that only happened in bad live action after school shows on Nick. I've never been physically bullied in my whole life. Picked on a bit in the earlier years, but nothing even close to that. I've always known a healthy relationship between jocks and other sub-sets of classmates, even anime nerds and goths.

What is this cartoonish buffoonery? The way you explain it, that principal should have been fired. You should have been on the news.

Da*n dude. That's some serious sh*t, 1st, I will tell you my own story.

I too was an regular guy who just didn't want to start anything or make any waves. But I had 2 strikes against me. 1, I was black. and 2, I was smart. Well, in most people's minds that equals Steve Erkel. Well, to make a long story short. Quarterback comes by makes fun of me and rips apart a priceless book that was out of print. I then proceed to beat the hell out of him and break 3 ribs and a collarbone. I got my ass handed to me academically because 1, there was a game in a few days, and 2, he had been tormenting me for years.

The administration lets this crap happen because if their team wins championships, more people will move into the area. and more people moving into the area=more tax money for the schools. Also, I think that they get the "big Ups" by winning the championship....whats the phrase...? Oh.... Bragging rights. That's why this crap happens, because also they are looking out for their images.

yeesh that is harsh I'm sorry for what happened to you. I personally had to deal with bullying from 3rd grade to 9th from the same person albeit he wasn't a jock he is more of a douche-bag that likes to steal peoples friends *COUGH COUGH* well yes the day he stopped picking on me was after he shoved me into my locker (collar bone + sharp metal edge) and i introduced his forehead to Mr.Concrete wall and threatened him with massive pain if he kept it up any longer, and the teachers hated him more than they liked me so i didn't hear a word about the incident.
But back to the topic..... schools are self centered and only care about their image and a good sports team = good image so yeah.

Yeah, my school was just built two years ago, so they are heavily modernized with cameras in every single hallway, smoke detectors in the bathrooms, and a zero tolerance policy for bullying and violence. Seriously, two kids got in a fight last year, and a bunch of people went to go watch. One kid brought brass knuckles. He was flat out expelled. Half the people (the ones they caught) who went to go see the fight got suspended for allowing it to happen.

So what I'm saying is: I can't relate. But know that that level of abuse isn't normal. You should have sued. Sued them for every penny they were worth.

Maybe jocks get away with it...or maybe they become the guys that sit on the couch with doritos and that football they used to carry in highschool dreaming about being somebody back in the day while the smart kids go on to advance the human species with something that means something. Or maybe not. Who knows right? You stood up for yourself and made the people who were ignoring you listen even though they were ignorant and refused to listen in the beginning. Best of all, you did so without resorting to the kind of violence that makes CNN money. Congratulations friend, go forth and be the best damned archer in the world.

Okay yeah this is a life story but it has a point

I've been beaten up my whole life (weather it be because I'm weird, because I'm poor, or because I'm 18 and have never had a girlfriend)

but in 7th grade (weird/poor) things went too far

the Football team would always hold me down and take turns hitting me
or pelting me with tennis and baseballs

scares bruises and black eyes everywhere

the teachers said "they're just boys being boys"

then one day at the gym, we were doing the rope climb
you climb this really tall rope, ring the bell, then fall onto this really soft cooshy pad so you don't have to climb all the way back down (the pad itself was like 4-5 feet tall, and felt like a tempurpedic bed)

well I rang the bell and slid down the rope a little (because I didn't trust them for a reason) then about half way down the rope I let go and fell for the pad

the quarterback then proceeded to pull the pad out from under me and I hit the hard-wood floor with a loud thud

everyone laughed

I then lost my temper and garroted the quarterback with the rope (wrapped it around his neck and pulled tight) yelling that he would never do that again

then things became very serious; the teacher yelled at the class to "get him off of him" and well yeah you can see where things went

in the end, I got expelled for hurting the quarterback
and when I showed the bruises, crutches, and scars and told them how I got them they said "it's one thing to harm the student body, it's another thing to make up stories to justify it"

...the principal then tried to convince me to take up something to relieve my anger such as football, or baseball, or soccer...

goes to show what a jock he was as well

off note: I ended up taking archery in boyscouts and was the only one that could bullseye every time on the 20 yard target... I was told that I shouldn't take an anger outlet that would let me kill people from 60 feet away with a sharp stick

EDIT: Crap I forgot the question; why is it that the jocks can get away with ANYTHING but the second I defend myself after being badly injured (with 33 witnesses mind you) I get in major trouble?

EDIT 2: sorry actually I wasn't "expelled" I was just "suspended" for a quarter of the year

when I got back the jocks started beating me with bricks (apparently a drunk driver hit the wall next to the church or something)

and I just ran into the office as fast as I could and the second the principal heard my voice and the phrase "law suit"

well...
we had a talk

then I was suspended for my own safety

because he didn't want me to be in an environment where I could get hurt
(you know, because punishing the victim is TOTALLY what you're supposed to do... not punish the [4] offenders!)

EDIT 3: I'm not like this anymore and this has been taken care of (got half the kids there to stop attending and shut down one of the two schools they had... which were right across the street from each other haha)

Just throwing that out there

I'm not really a violent person (yes I am I just keep it in- and blame society)
so no one think I'm a freak or anything lol

just was wondering if anyone else has things like this happen and if this is running rampent
thank god you won in the end, (i think? you said that right?)

any way, yeah, um this doesn't happen in public schools, im pretty sure you were in a private school, if not, then I don't know, never had this problem, though was bullied, never really had a jock problem. I think private schools may get away with this because they can, and parents don't control their system.
