Dave Snider's rule of video games, if you have a choice, if you're going to be looking at something for a long time, it might aswell be a lady.

Becauese we want to.
That's all the reason you need, for gods sake stop trying to justify it, it makes you look insecure.

Attention my fellow escapists:

The "ass" line has been used over 8000 times in this thread alone. It's no longer witty. Not even when quoted ironically. Anyone else with nothing further to contribute can save themselves time and energy by simply typing the words "ass line." Since we've all memorized it, we'll know what you mean.

On topic, I occasionally play female characters simply because I like female warrior-types, provided they're done in a way that isn't terribly exploitative.* It's not even a sexual thing, I've just always enjoyed characters who combine class, elegance and grace with an ability to rip out your skull and beat you to death with it. I like my male characters to approach this from the opposite direction: in short, I like (and empathize with) characters who have a mixture of masculine and feminine traits,** and find it harder to get into the heads of characters at the extreme ends of that scale (be they super macho space marine types or girly girls).

*I personally use the Dante Rule to determine when fanservice has crossed the line. In short; is the female character under scrutiny more exploitative of women than Dante (he of Devil May Cry fame) is of men? If so, the character in question probably takes things too far.

**The proper term for this is androgyny, but on a video game forum, people associate that with JRPG characters, and that isn't what I mean. At all.

I play a lot of fighters, and when you get down to it, the characters game is based off a general image/ identity for the style of combat.

Males tends to = BIG AND STRONG MUST SMASH. You have your Zangief types in extreme.
Females tends to = Finesse and poise. You have your Ling Xiaoyu types in extreme.

I prefer tact over brawn. And thus, in most case I play the female characters as it goes. :eek:

I think that whole macho spin on things is a bit lame as well, when you play, don't expect all the girls to be women playing...or guys to be men players.

On this token, anyone play Guilty Gear? You KNOW Bridget threw you off! :p

Because I feel like it?
I usually play a male character, but to mix it up sometimes, I play a fem.

I usually prefer playing female characters, for a variety of reasons. I find the voice acting is often better (especially in Mass Effect!) and the male characters often look kinda bland and same-y. In the end, it boils down to: I like women, so I play as one.

I always play male character, I like to be able to immerse myself to the game so I can think that I am the character, and since I am a Male playing male characters help.

I don't play much female characters, mainly because they are always rendered as sex-goddess, slim bodies, good hair and usually extremely visual breasts. Aka: Not realistically.

And since I am like I am. I don't who's or what's ass I am looking at. Long as it has good posture.

I usually play a female character when roleplaying is at a minimum - eg, my WoW characters are all female, my Eve character is female, etc. If the character is a purely aesthetic creation then I prefer the aesthetics of females. Also, it helps to stand out when lots of the warrior-type players use male characters. Females also tend to have better animations (though your mileage may vary).

When I'm actually role-playing (Dragon Age, Fallout, Mass Effect, other customised-character rpgs) I tend to play a male in line with my own gender. This has one specific exception - I have a FemShep in addition to my male one, she's just too badass to leave hanging.

I like the idea of a women kicking ass rather than the typical macho man.

No reason other than that. I generally don't play females when given more feminine roles.

I usually don't bother to go through some impressive mind pattern when I do pick a character to play in a game. I just take something cliché and work from there.

So, if I wish to be stealthy, I'll take the boobs thief/rogue/whatever that sneaks if the opportunity presents itself.

Buuuuuuuutttt if I want to be a mighty warrior that cleaves men in half with my mighty cleaver!... I'll pick the abs and brick wall muscular man.

For me it depends on the character, what they're going to do, what kind of game they're in and the character designs. Take WoW for example, I think almost all male characters look stupid, so I play female ones with the exception of Tauren and Worgen.
Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 are good examples of another reason I make females, a battle hardened female is so much more rare and interesting to see than a battle hardened man.

I mean think about it, how many strong, in charge and take charge women are there in video games that aren't there simply to be a love interest, be killed for sympathy or dressed in stupidly skimpy clothing? Not very many.
Female Shepard is miles ahead of male Shepard because of those reasons.

This topic will always be firmly routed in an individuals motivations;

I've considered the games and characters I've played and believe my gender choices boils down to;

Male
If the game and character is one where I have a large input to the characters motivations though moral choices and social responses e.g. ME2, Dragon Age, Fallout 3, Deus Ex etc. then I choose my IRL gender;

I'll play the game as myself with the male character as closely modelled on myself and make decisions purely based on my own ethics, beliefs etc, sometimes to the detriment of acquiring items, upgrades etc.
Sure I may miss out on a special item but I've been true to myself and that's served to further immerse me in to the game.

Female
In games where the response/outcome will largely be the same regardless of gender then I tend to go for a female character, I'd like to claim this is due to some high-minded gender equality reason but in reality it just comes down to the fact that through long play times e.g. Guild Wars I would much rather derive some base visual pleasure from an attractive female avatar rather than a male in the same role.
