Where ever I look there is always a movie tie in game. But why do people buy them. They are some of the worst games I have ever seen Companies still make them. Can't game companies put a little effort into what they make?

There is money in making games that are based on popular movies. The reason they suck is, that movies aren't meant for interactivity, which is the strength of video games. When you base something that has to be interactive on something that has a fixed plot and storyline, you're mostly bound to fail. Unless you build the game around the CONCEPT of the movie, rather than the plot.

its simply for hype, and advertisement. It doesn't matter what we say, 10 year old kids will get mommy and daddy to buy those crappy Comic/movie/game tie ins, and they will still make a couple mill. However there are a few gems. Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay was awesome, and Spider-Man 2. However those are the only two I can think of.

One of the reasons would be because they allways hurry to release them as soon as possible, so the movie would still be new, when they release the game. Those games are for fanboys, and fanboys only.

Because they:

a) have to launch the game the same day as the movie.
b) they think (and are usually right) that ravid fans of the movie/game series will just buy it anyway.
c) they aren't Vin Diesel.

It's just to get as much profit out of the movie as possible. Developers don't care much about quality with these games; they're quick money fixes. Thankfully, less people have been buying them lately, so maybe they'll stop making them, or at least stop making them suck.

They are rushed out in order to make money. They don't care about the quality. If something is popular and there is merchandise on it, then people will buy the merchandise. This is also why Sonic Team keeps making games. No matter how bad their games are and no matter what people say about the games, Sonic Team will continue to make horrible Sonic game because it makes money. I've seen kids go into GameStop and look specifically for the new Sonic games and I had to hold myself back from telling them that it was an awful choice and that they shouldn't waste money on it. Just live and let live, you know? If you don't like the games don't buy them. Then you won't be supporting an evil and corrupt business (of course, if you don't want to support evil and corrupt businesses, you shouldn't be a gamer because that's what the market is all about.).

Most movie based games are bad because they are rushed by trying to tie-in with the theater release of the movie. The few good ones are usually the ones that come out after the movie has already come out. Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth II is a perfect example of a great movie-based game and it came out after the movies started showing in theaters.

Then there are inexplicably terrible movie based games that come out long after the movies have come out like that newest Lord of the Rings game that Pandemic came out with. How they could screw up a Lord of the Rings version of the excellent Star Wars Battlefront II game is beyond me, but they managed to do it. I so wanted that game to be great, what a let down it was!
