I was watching Dane Cook (yes I'm a fan) and I began wondering why people suddenly began to hate him so much once he became mainstream.

The same with Halo. It was praised and then became really popular and people turned against it.

Same with music, anime, movies, tv shows. If people do like it they won't admit it to others, because they're... idk afraid of people's opinion of them?

Why are people so against mainstream? Please tell me your opinion!

Well some people just hate mainstream stuff because since alot of people like it them not liking it would make them feel different and cool.

Honestly I don't think Dane Cook is as funny as he used to be. His older shit is hilarious!

But I don't know, people that say away from mainstream just seem a little more interesting and independant, at least to me anyways.

Mainstream tends to becomes diluted with garbage that the fans don't notice, simply because they become mindless fanboys/fangirls for whatever it happens to be.

Some mainstream things are decent, but sometimes the producers/makers/artists find out they don't have to spend time or effort to continue receiving unfairly earned appreciation and money.

Good reason for that actually. They take good franchises and kill them, they rehash the same sports games over and over again, they often show blatant bias against certain consoles or just deny consoles good things in general, etc.

Would you like to take your pick?

Anyway, people hate Mainstream because sometimes mainstream can be overhyped to the point where they think something can cure cancer when it can barely treat a cold. The thing in question may be good, but it might not be worthy of all the praise. That's where the hate comes from.

Because I'd rather listen to music that has some meaning behind than what the mainstream has to offer me.

I personally just think that a lot of indie movies/comics/music tend to be better, because it moves through less people to create the medium in question. No studio executives and other such nonsense to completely screw with a good idea.

I never thought Halo was that great, and I always thought Dane Cook was kinda funny in short bursts, and if your opinion of something is influenced at all by how popular it is you have some issues you need to deal with.

I might have a reputation as a mainstream hater because I like to bring attention to little known things. For example, I recommended the movie Brazil to a group of friends and they thought it was "gay" because it wasn't mainstream, then they loved it.

I also hate how people tend to gloss over games in a series that didn't quite make it big. Silent Hill Orphan may be a shitty game, but it is also a Silent Hill game, so it goes with it. Resident Evil: Gaiden may be a shitty game, but it is also a Resident Evil game.

I don't make a conscious effort to avoid mainstream things, I just pick and choose what a like, I don't feel the need to pretend.
So, you actually like Gaiden, I'm a bit of a RE fanboy and I couldn't play that game for too long.

Because the majority of the mainstream is total crap. Sure, it's loved by millions of people, but that doesn't mean I like it. Really, watching/listening to today's pop culture makes me wish the zombie apocalypse would start so all of these uncreative idiots find something better to do.

If I like something, I could care less if it's "mainstream" or not. Like Coheed and Cambria has a large fanbase, but I love that band to death.

Most of the other stuff I listen to or watch is considered total crap by others, and I'm fine with that. I like it better that way because it doesn't become overrated and worn out.

I despise the belief people hold in regards to the music industry that a band instantly becomes bad the moment they 'sell-out'. Frankly, that's pretty much the whole purpose of the music industry. It's their job. They need to make money or they don't eat food.

Because Dane Cook me some dinner stole comedic material, just like Carlos Mencia. That's why. And as far as Halo goes, I think people just got tired of hearing about it. It's a really smooth FPS, I'll give you that... but you can hardly start talking about video games without someone chiming in, "oh yeah, what about Halo?" Do you see where I'm coming from? Do you know the majority of compared games I see on Live? *what Steve?* I'll tell you, buddy. Halo 3, Halo Wars, Fable 2. L4D, and RE5. That is what I see. That alone has inspired me to play equally good, lesser known games, just so I can stop seeing that shit.

Dane Cook has always sucked and so has Halo.

It has nothing to do with them being mainstream, its just that they suck anyway.

But on other things, like music, people tend to not like it when it gets mainstream because they think that the band sells out to "The Man"!

Hahaha oh no no no, it's an abysmal game. It's just went people say things like "all Resident Evil games are good" they tend to forget this gem.
Thank god, although I only played it for the lulz, at least I didn't actually pay any money for that pile of crap.

Well all i know is their sales figures speak for themselves. If you hate them for making money then hate every other company for the same reasons, isnt that the point of a business model?
Business model is usually to NOT do something stupid. EA seems to not follow that general rule, though. They'd make alot more money if they actually got their act together. They have much room for improvement.

What ever is popular cannot, by definition, be good. Everybody knows that. And since everybody thinks so, they are wrong, so what is popular IS good after all. Except it isn't... argh! My counter-culture hipster snobbery is imploding under the weight of it's own dubious arguments! Blargharagrahrahra what a world what a world...! *dies*

I've never found Dane Cook funny.

And the beef people have with halo IS the fact it became popular. The game is ok, it's the fact it got disproportionally popular compared with it's quality that irritates many people.

I am personally into underground music, and it has nothing to do with
a) being popular
b) worrying about bands selling out.
lets consider that some people like some things, while other people like others. My issue comes from integrity. Not a lot of people can see my point on music but I like when a band is in it for the craft rather then the payout. I listen to bands who will never make millions of dollars because I appreciate there commitment to music and I just happen to enjoy how it sounds. It's easy to assume people just do things to be popular, on the other hand some people just appreciate things you may not. (also on this note if i Love a band and they suddenly start making tonnes of money i'm all for it. good for them.)
