why do people hate origin so much?

My original hatred of origin stemmed purely from the tracking and selling of information to start with , now its purely down to it being a piss poor invasive piece of badly clothed DRM.

Steam is an open publisher distribution system which has done tons of goods for countless indie games devs, provided me with over 100 top of the line games each for under a fiver in their world class sales along with offering community tools,

Origin is EA only , its just DRM and malware it brings nothing to the table it doesn't help the industry or the consumer, its anti-competition and just another monopoly exploit to ream consumers.

we should be able to use any platform we like to digitally purchase any game we like, steam is happy to compete and play fair, origin is not.


-edit- forgot this bit.. i don't know how much they calmed down on origins data collection for sale aspect after the backlash but if you think its just about having things to hide your missing the point. its about setting up databases were you can be auto filtered out of jobs because of interests , have targeted marketing forced on you there are tons of ways social profiling is just plain bad, the most striking case i guess is to ask the Jews about 1940's Germany.

i have just found a reason i hate origin: they updated bf3 today now i have to download the whole 483.7 mb patch AGAIN the DAY AFTER i downloaded it. WHY do i have to download the WHOLE LOT AGAIN?????

The ToS or EULA or whatever it's called, have terms that I could never agree with as a consumer. It can change at any time without notification, that by itself is plenty of reason not to agree with it.

In my language the terms are in several cases incomprehensible, I wouldn't even know what I would be agreeing to.

EA's intention to keep control of the products they sell is not compatible with my idea of a purchase. If I purchase something I decide when and how to use it. Thats not for EA to decide.

The Origin software itself seems to be so amateurishly designed that I wouldn't want to install an application like that, even if EA doesn't intend to use it for evil. And I don't really trust the benevolence of EA enough to trust them with my privacy in the first place.

To be honest I do not like origin or steam. both are forms of DRM. sure you can still play off line for a while but it will want to check again. it's only a small step better then what ubisoft do. Plus I don't want to have to log in to gods know what and how many panels before I can play my game. The most effort I ideally want to do with the game is install the thing and that's it.
Go away with your origin, your steam, windows live and anything else that hampers me or slows me down from playing My Game that I bought with My Money!

Well, there are some things I don't like about it, and why I haven't gotten in yet. I don't "hate" it though, but then again my disliking of anything pales in comparison of the BURNING HATE the internet has for anything.

- I do not like the idea of Origin exclusivity. I know Steam does this too, atleast to some extent, and I don't like that either. I don't like exclusivity of any kind to be honest. Steam seems more open overall (but I don't know, haven't looked that much into it).
- I don't like that it's owned by a game company, and again, Steam is owned by Valve and I don't like that idea either.
- On a more personal note, I just want one program that has my games. I already have Steam, I don't need Origin. The only reason why I may have to get it is because exclusivity, and that sucks.

-has amazing sales, often letting me buy many games for under £10
-doesnt datamine my comp, gives you the option to reject it
-has games from many different publishers and developers
-(for me atleast) it has never glitched out once
-and while it is DRM as long as ive activited the game online it has no problems with me playing offline.
-also has very reliable chat options and forums.
-doesnt ban your account and deactivate your games for the slightest provaktion.
-however due to no EA games, no BF3

-only EA, a company who is supporting the SOPA bill i might add
-very unstable software, yes i know steam was back in the day but im not going to use this when i have steam
-the DRM on this is rather unpredictable
-EA has a tendency to ban peoples accounts for anyreason it can think of essentially robbing you of money
-only way to play BF3 on PC, luckily i have an xbox

in my eyes it,s been created in "me too-ing" of EA also I HATE EA I checked it out for a minute or 2 and it looks like a weak steam rip-off.
also from what I heard of it it,s pure mall-ware.

i keep hearing about people complaining that origin is this and origin is that that is tracks what u have on ur pc and such im just wandering whats the problem? steam records ur pc specs and what u have installed. whats different about origin? why do people hate it so much?

PS. i have both origin and steam installed on my pc and haven't had any trouble so far with ether.

My problem with origin is actually less about origin and more about my dislike of EA. IMO EA is not a good publisher. My experiences with their customer service have been at best frustrating, their marketing department seems to believe that any attention to a game is good attention (to which I disagree), and if I could avoid giving them any money I would. No seriously I would totally prefer to give the full $60 to Bioware for a game rather then let EA or a retailer get a penny

Anyway, after seeing the original Origin ToU and then watching it suddenly change I had to sit down and really think about what origin was offering me and more importantly who was in charge of it. That lead me to a realization, I dont trust EA enough to believe they wont sell any info they gather from my computer.

Now Im against all programs that consistantly scan my hardware and software, this is mostly why I refuse to use steam except to grab indie games that I think I might enjoy but my dislike is not completely because of Digital distribution programs its mostly due to my mistrust of EA.

Until EA earns my trust again, if thats even possible, I want as little to do with them as humanly possible

Steam's Terms of Agreement is more specific than Origin's (as worded, Origin's basically says "We reserve the right to scan your entire hard drive and use the data we find for marketing purposes").

To date, Steam has not even attempted to access files, folders, or registry entries outside of its own app data (I have software that tells me what something is accessing, and when; beyond your regular Anti-Virus and Firewall software).

Based on what I've heard from other users (in the computer security field) Origin has.
I don't trust Origin, and I certainly don't trust EA. So I'm not going to use it. Simple as that.

No third parties are allowed access to your data. Data which is not allowed to have any information to identify you.

You should probably re-read the Origin ToS and compare it to Sony's for PSN or Steam.

Being a stickler here, but since you aren't allowed to take EA to court (unless you sent them that letter), basically everything in the EULA is non-negotiable and unenforceable from the consumer's side, unless EA commits or is an accessory to a crime (which they will just offload onto an individual, protecting themselves anyway).

Between that and the costs of legal action, for all practical purposes EA can essentially do whatever the fuck they want with your data. It's this sort of combination of terms and clauses that have created a perfect unilateral agreement and it's only a matter of time before they start flexing that newfound muscle.

I don't like Origin because its not Steam. I like all my games to be in one place.

Example - Sins of a Solar Empire was just put on steam this weekend. I bought it a second time just to have it on Steam. Then I uninstalled Impulse, which is where I bought it the first time.

I hate hate hate hate hate BattleLog. DICE has said it was their idea, but I know in my heart that they're contractually obligated to say that. I know it was EA's fault.

Bottom line is people are used to steam and have grown to trust it thanks to a healthy dose of goodwill in valve, people ain't used to origin yet and the damage from earlier reports about it spying on your comp has sort of gotten them on the wrong foot, not to mention EA doesn't have anywhere near the goodwill valve has due to its publishing history.
