Why do people like Avatar so much?

Self-explanatory but really? I mean yeah sure it looked really pretty but thats not much to say with this generations technology, I mean seriously, the special effects were awesome but the acting was average at best, most of the characters were stock, and the plot was about as original as the whole super soldier idea.

So seriously, whats the big fucking deal with Avatar? Why all the acclaim? I can name three scifi movies off the top of my head that were a million times better than Avatar. And before you ask not one of them have the words Star, Wars, or Trek, in the title.

*sigh*
I thought we were over this.
Why not move on to KickAss or The Last Airbender like everyone else?
Um, people like it because...it has top of the line CGI? I lie to see what we're capable of doing, so....

Okay... calm down...

It was a good movie, it doesnt have to be the best to deserve praise, not everything is the best. It can still be good, emotional and theilling movie.

I did like Avatr, very much, it was one of my fabourite movies that i watched last year, getting betaing by my other watchings of star wars and my first viewing of District 9, but i still enjoyed it.

The Last Airbender i don't want to even start on, and i thoroughly enjoyed Kick-Ass, it was original with human, relatable characters. Which is pretty hard to do when one is a batshit crazy 11 year old and another is essentially Batman doing an Adam West impersonation.

But Avatar? Compared to movies like Aliens and District 9? Pretty much shit

If you don't think the original Star Wars trilogy was better than Avatar, anything you say has already been completely invalidated.

Regardless, it's because it was a good movie. The plot wasn't too original or anything, but never has it been told quite like this. The world of Pandora and the society of the Na'vi was well-developed and beautiful. It was simply a good film.

EDIT: And since it's been brought up, Avatar: The Last Airbender is pretty much the best show ever made, and I can't wait for the movie adaptation. :D

Strip out the eye candy & its just another damn movie!
My point exactly! Its by no means a bad movie, but its just so damn average in every single aspect except for the eye candy.

And Avatar: The Last Airbender was an awesome damn show, but you will only say its the best show ever made until you find another show you like better. Im just saying the movie will suck, which it will.

And i do think the original Star Wars is better than Avatar, i just put that in there so that all the die hard Avatar fanboys wouldn't say things like, "let me guess STAR WARS?" or "another trekkie bitching about Avatar." So chill yourself good sir

Am I the only one who hasn't bothered to watch avatar i seriously don't feel like i am missing out. Also acclaim means nothing these days, in almost any industry that reigns true.

Simple, James Cameron directed it and it's pretty. I personally hold Avatar in my own personal hell. It to me shows that originality doesn't get you much. I'm tired of the same old copy paste story crap that goes on in recent movies. Least it has made watching movies like District 9 all the more enjoyable.

Don't get my wrong, it's by no means a bad movie. It's like Final Fantasy XIII, it's stunning and beautiful, thrilling and exciting. Then you come to the story and characters. And aside from the Colonel. I could have cared less about them living or dying. That's right, the villian in the movie was the most interesting character and the only one I remotely cared for at all.

The movie is a prime example of how we as sheople will be awed by pretty colors and flashing pictures. Despite the fact that there is an obvious lack of substance and effort in the characters and story.

It's a very good popcorn movie IMO. it's not particularly deep or artistic, but it's something to watch and enjoy. Not great, but good.

Very good points, i mean i knew how this movie was going to play out from the start. Dude is crippled, dude gets offered ability to be noncrippled, dude goes undercover, dude gets boner for main girl, dude decides abandoning his own race is a swell idea, dude's undercover is blown, gets blamed for death of secondary charecter, dude does something epic, all is forgiven, epic battle, now end it with a kiss.

Good CGI, other than that I hated every last minute of it. The story and message hit with the subtly of a sledgehammer. And the acting on the part of the marines was irritating as hell. Not to mention the fact that its 45 min too long exacerbated by the likelihood that your also 45 min ahead of the movie.

Of course it's going to look like shit when you compare it to other films. The same argument could be used for every bloody film in existence until it boils down to one title! So I have to ask -- on it's own -- did Avatar not entertain you? I could understand if it didn't but since that's normally the reason you would go to cinema in the first place, it's a huge factor when it comes to whether it's popular or not.

Meh, I was kinda over Avatar the moment it started. No disrespect to James Cameron, he's done awesome movies (Aliens = pwnage) but I was just not convinced by the whole story. It kind of reminded me of another certain film, who's name escapes me for the moment *Cough*Dances With Wolves*Cough cough*

RAWR I'm sick to fucking death of critics whining about the quality of acting in pretty much every film...you know why professional critics are professional critics...because they are failed actors OR they took media studies which makes them less qualified to accuse actors of failing in a film because they're hacks (heres to you Moviebob you retarded droning fuck). Oh course you're entitled to your own opinion but please for fucks sake don't start bleating because you didn't like something if you couldn't tell from the hype it was all about the graphics and the story wasn't too bad there was nothing about super soldiers and yes it was basically dances with wolves but thats okay because we recycle ideas that's how the entertainment industry works experimentation with different things; but if you saw the adverts and thought hmm I'm want to watch something a bit more original then don't fucking watch it you fucking IDIOT!!! Although gotta hand it to you I'm amazed you know about stock characters....oh wait so does a large ammount of the public maybe thats why they use them because the public instantly understands them without having to give them a wordy monologue/duologue to establish them as a character...before you bleat again Star Wars used stock characters, Luke is a loveable everylad Hans is a charming rogue Obi-wan is the crazy old mentor etc.....and breath....the point I'm trying to make is don't ask retarded questions because you'll make me angry, you won't like me when I'm angry!! ;)
Although i am inclined to like you for knowing of Graverobber, your abuse of grammar is unforgivable, and since when is it a bad idea for making an audience think? And acting is important to that thing called immersion, i go into movies wanting to see quality everything, i will call it out whenever i see something of less quality.

Star Wars is something that i have a childhood affection for, i didn't grow up with it, i wasn't even ten when the Phantom Menace came out, the point im trying to make is we shouldn't ignore faults in movies for any reason whatsoever.

Constructive criticism is what is needed nowadays, because no movie is perfect.

Except Pulp Fiction

I dunno, I thought we were beyond good CGI carrying a movie, since good CGI is pretty much a given in fantasy films these days. And CGI stopped impressing me quite a while ago, so I have a feeling I'm still not going to like it. I haven't seen Avatar yet, so maybe these amazing graphics really are that amazing.

Eh, I'll find it when it comes out on Blu-Ray I guess.

The fight scenes entertained me, but enetertaining someone is easy to do, bubblewrap can entertain someone who is bored as fuck but that isnt going to win them any awards is it? And i compared it to those two movies because although there was some stock charecters, they were more than just stock, they became actual charecters that you could see in everday life. (Aliens to a far lesser extent)

So yes, Avatar did entertain me, it has achieved the same thing that throwing a paper ball and making it into a trashcan can do.

Hype. That's the big deal. There was a lot of hype and a lot of people who haven't seen all the cool amazing shit that can be done with today's technology saw it as something new. Avatar was ALL hype. Just get some big names saying it's awesome and then the simple people go see it and tell all of their friends that it's amazing and should go see it. People like us who have seen tons of sci-fi and tons of CG animation know this movie isn't the first of it's kind, but we are not everyone =\
