This may come off as me being pretentious and snooty, but I'm honestly trying to understand.

Why, for one week in the year, do we all decide to lose our collective shit over sharks?

People like sharks and a whole week dedicated just to them on TV people are gonna get excited. Its really not that hard to figure out. The same thing would happen if Discovery Channel did a Dinosaur Week people would be excited about that too because dinosaurs are interesting and people like learning about them in whatever way involves the least amount of reading.

I have oft wondered this myself...Let us go into the study and ponder this quandary using Jungian and Freudian etudes as reference, shall we?

PPPFFFFF its simple, man. It satiates an instinctive compulsion of ours to validate our fears of a powerful killing machine.

Ever since the dawn of man, people have been hiding in the bushes to watch some predator voraciously thrash its prey. Now we hide behind our LCD wide screens and a slightly-out-of-place Neil Patrick Harris hosting a show...about a predator voraciously thrashing its prey.

Sharks, apex predators for millions of years, perfectly adapted and deadly in their environment, the most powerful hunters (short of giant squids but they don't tend to eat people so much) there are in the ocean and full of facinating facts about them.
I don't know why I wouldn't like a week dedicated to them.

Dinosaurs are more interesting though. At this point we pretty much know all there is to know about sharks. Dinosaur week would be pretty sweet though: a week of all the developments made and things found out about dinosaurs.

It's true, we learn more and more about sharks every day but there's way more we're finding out about Dinosaurs and pre-historic creatures on a day-to-day basis. Of course it's the new species I'm more interested in...

I never really bought into the whole shark week thing myself. I get more excited over the semi-yearly return of the McRib.

Having never watched an episode of shark week, I have to ask: is there anything left to learn about sharks? The event has been going for a few years now and I would assume that with 24 hours of programming dedicated to sharks there's very little left to learn, and what is left is the really uninteresting stuff.

It's been going on since the 80s, so is there much left? Plus I really don't care for sharks, so I haven't viewed it once.

Not gonna lie. I read that and heard a squirrel-like voice (I see you hate comas). XP But yeah... and-

Oh my God, don't remind me of it.

Discovery Channel just kept playing the same annoying ad over and over. I really couldn't give a shit about sharks, even less when one of my favourite channels decides to dedicate an entire week to that crap.

More along the lines of female periods. It's "Shark week".
