Why do people post when they have nothing to say?

Because, that's why.

Same reason people make stupid threads, *HINT*, sometimes people just want to say something.

This is actually really interesting. Do you really wish they didn't count? And if so, may I ask why?

The general consensus seems to be that there is, at times, an active pursuit of a high post count. And yet the poster with the highest count, (and I must confess to a double-take when I saw that impressive number Sass!) gives the impression of wishing theirs was smaller. I don't want to second guess you, so tell me if I'm way off the mark, but I'm reminded of Alexander the Great's dismay at finding no more lands to conquer. Sometimes when you're too far ahead, it's just not fun anymore.

I guess because stating that you have nothing to say does sort of count as saying something. It does piss me off when people post for the express purpose of increasing their post count while contributing nothing to the thread. I mean, sure, some posts are useless in that they're repeating what others have said, and some posts are useless in that they're irrelevant, but at least they make an effort.

I think some people can't quite express what they want to say in a coherent manner. They write words, but they mean very little, but they post anyway, maybe so they can declare they're not sitting on a fence.

I'm probably at the opposite end of the spectrum, I try to put a lot of thought into what I say; but if I can't put it eloquently, I just give up and move on. So a lot of what I want to say doesn't get said, which may be an annoyance for some people when they do it.

My guess is... They want to let you know that they exist, yet really don't have anything to say... But still want to make sure you are aware that they are paying attention to what you are talking about...

For the same reason that twitter exists: Everyone believes that everything they do and say is of the utmost importance, and that everyone else must read what they're saying and recognise their brilliance.

In other words, delusions of importance.
Probably more from bordom/something to do than delusions of grandeur

That little posts counter under your avatar goes one up every time you post. Therefore since people want to look cool and have alot of posts they go ahead and post away.

It annoys me the most when the OP asks a question and then someone just posts "I don't know". If you don't know the answer to their question then don't bloody post D:

Yeah, I really wish they didn't. Why? Because in my time here, people have debated that I'm a spam-bot, have no social life[footnote]And yet, I have a girl-friend. Weird that, huh?[/footnote], post for the sake of posting and, in a recent thread about Halo, said I may need a therapist, which was very nice to read(!) I don't want to have to deal with, how can I put this...dicks, really, who are judging me based on a number and jumping to conclusions that are far from true and that does eventually begin to wear you down and get to you after a year or so of mutterings like that.

As for me wishing my count was smaller, I actually wish they didn't show it on the forums, as do a few other users. It's been used too much to measure a user's "worth" to the forums which has led to a few small arguments on this site.[footnote]Yes, I am referring to that incident back in January 2010 when a user decided to label everyone with a high post count as "The people that ruined this site." ¬¬[/footnote] There's also a page on Wikipedia that actually states that "Higher post count = Respect and others following your opinions." While this hasn't been the case for me, apart from two occasions, I have seen it around here before a lot. It's such a fricking stupid thing, that some people think a high post count equals respect and worldly knowledge of how the forum works. And for those who think a post count does equal that, PSST! Newsflash for ya! It really doesn't.

And as for the whole conquering thing, it's never been about getting to the top of...well, whatever the top is on this forum is.[footnote]That might be Kuliani's job, community manager.[/footnote] Honestly, when I joined, I thought I'd have a modest post count if I was still here at this point then I think Neonbob brought me into the forum games. I come here for fun, which the forum games are, and the post count is a by-product of that. I don't want to be remembered around here for that or anything. Though it is still fun to post here, the fun is wearing off a little when people start making you a public discussion point.

So there we go. Hopefully that's cleared it up a little.

To get their post count up maybe? Don't you get badges when you hit a particular number of posts?
