Why do people queue for stuff like this?

Yesterday, where I live opened a Krispy Kreme, it's the first one in my area (and in about a 50 mile radius) to open.

As it was my Birthday, I went in to said town around 12-1pm to waste some money and noticed the que... Jesus Christ I've never seen a queue like it in all my life, especially for Doughnuts of all things?!
It was out of the shop, up the shopping centre, out the doors and right up the street. I mean, you had a damn long bloody wait for a Doughnut.

I went back in to town at around 8pm for drinks and food and had to walk past where Krispy Kreme has opened, there was still queues going out side, albeit, not as long, but people where still quing up.

I don't unsertand it, what is so special about something that will now always be there, that you're prepared to que up for hours for it on a certain day? And will only be consumed within a matter of mouth stuffing moments.

Discussion value: Is there anything you has seen/read about which had made you think "Why are people queuing up for this?"

but the doughnuts were new.
and they are guaranteed to be fresh on opening day

OT: Generally whenever something new opens up there are massive lines, I try not to think about why people want to wait 2 hours for fast food, which kinda defeats the purpose of FAST food

Ques for iPads. I got mine the day after the iPad 2 was released and didn't have to wait in a 3 mile que.

Some people just have to be one of the first though!

Same with traffic jams, I don't know what people see in them, but they'll stand in line to be in one. *badum tish*

Sorry, sorry, bad one.

OT: People like an event, I guess. Personally I wouldn't be caught dead in such a queue, but I think some mob/herd mentality is part of this as well.

And hey, seeing as it was the opening, it might have been free. People would line up for free air if you'd let them.

Funnily enough, they're not made in store but brought in "daily" from one of their stores that cooks them daily. So I'm un sure about the fresh-ness haha.

They already did the whole "free sample" things for weeks before it opened (they gave away the box of 12 ones!!!!)
I kinda wish I was around for that (and didn't have to que)

I think it was just a hype thing, but because it was for Doughnuts, I can't get my head around it lol

Obviously it's something new.. so people are going to flock to the place for a few weeks. It's like a new movie playing, new much awaiting video game coming out.. crowds that will just eventually die out. Go there in 2 weeks and you won't see 90% of those people.

They put cocaine in the kreme, why do think people line up for so long?

I never understood it. Shiplies Donuts are just as fresh, larger and just all around superior.

In Seattle if you wanted a nasty, cookie cutter bland sugar donut....well Krispy Krem is the way to go...

They also had a place called "Dicks" that made horrible burgers with tarter sauce on them.

Living in that area for 5 years I never got the appeal...and i love a good burger and those sure weren't good...

Dont Krispy Kreme often offer free glazed doughnuts when they open a new store in a new area? That would partly account for the size of the queues you experienced/saw.

I must have skipped over the earlier post about free ones! XD

You should've seen the line when they opened a Chipotle in my college town and were giving away free burritos the first day. Jeez, it went around the block.

And also, yea when a Krispy Kreme opened here they were giving away free donuts so ppl flocked there. Hell I even went, and then discovered I don't like Krispy Kreme donuts.

Sonic. They ran commercials for ages without there ever having been on in the area for years. Then they finally opened one off of a major highway. The line was so long that it was interfering with highway traffic and the police had to be called regularly for the first few weeks.

This reminds me of a test I heard about performed in Russia.
One man stood outside of a closed building for a while (can't remember whether it was a shop or some such) and a queue started forming within 30 minutes. Only got longer as the day went on as well, despite the fact that the first man hadn't moved on.
Not sure if it's true, but people do crazy stuff if they think they're getting something out of it or if it's new.

5 Guys Burgers and Frys, people always speak so highly of them and they have a bunch of awards but their burgers are so bland that they desperately need all those condiments and toppings in order to make them remotely average. But I guess that's what happens when you live in a state (Colorado) that has not been graced with any good fast food chains...

Maybe I'm spoiled from growing up in L.A. where we had In-and-Out Burger, and other awesome food...

there aren't many krispy Kremes here in New England (I have a feeling it's because dunkin doughnuts is a New England thing and muscles out the other doughnuts, as I'm sure it's the opposite in the south), but I was going to get one last time I went to Mohegan Sun, a Casino known for having it. But when I got there there was a giant line. And when I the show I went there to see was over, there was still a huge line. I really don't get waiting for that either. As for my own thing, I guess it would be the Harry Potter movies, I get that people enjoy them, and I like them as well, but 10 hours in line to see an hour and a half movie is insane, especially weaing a big fake beard and robes. Happy birthday OP!
Hollock out.

I'm pretty sure all of the Harry Potter movies have passed the two hour mark, with some of them exceeding two and a half hours long. I know it's kind of nitpicky, but I can't help but be nitpicky.

They did that when the first shop in Manchester was going to be open soon. Yes me and my mate queue up for it since my mate had them before (I never had a Krispy Kreme). The queue was worth it since I had fround them delicious! It was a shame I could eat them all so I gave the rest of my flatmates.
